Page 6-B Letter To The Editor Letter to Editor. My letter, that you publish ed on April 28, has brought quite a response from the local public and I appreciate your efforts in helping me make the public aware of the problems faced by our young children of divorced parents. Since my previous letter I have been able to research the problem on a somewhat limited basis. Divorce continues to split families at an alarming rate and where there are children involved they are the ones most hurt. They are the ones that suffer the most damag ing affects of this traumatic situation. Our judges inform us that until a child reaches the age of 14 he has no rights, therefore the younger children are usually placed with the mother. . Seldom is there enough con cern of the court to in vestigate to determine where the child would be better cared for. Our Social Services that is paid by our taxes could go far in helping. Studies have proven that a child’s formative years are those prior to their teens. By the time a child reaches the age of 14 his lifestyle, ideals and pattern have been set. According to a study made on 72 divorced families by University of Virginia psychologist E. Mavis Heatherton, boys are the hardest hit in this painful and damaging experience. More is expected of them and they receive less support from their mothers, teachers and peers as a result of this expectation. Our judges, these masters of manipulation, expect these young ones to be flexible and bounce back when only a short time ago these little ones were only learning to love, respect, and trust these two people that are now tak ing it all away. The child becomes confus ed and has a sense of guilt, feeling they are being punish ed for some wrong they have done. Our children are the greatest resource this country has and, as their guardians, it is our responsibility to pro tect, encourage and guide them. It is totally impossible for a judge to determine what is in the ‘‘Best interest of the Child" without talking with the child and having an in vestigation of both parents lifestyle. My son who is now six has lived with me without his mother for over two years. We live in the country where he has room to run, play and grow. He has been taught the responsibility of caring for animals aiid the love of gardening and watching things grow. There is no drinking nor drugs in. our home and his religion is a part of his daily life. The judge would have me turn him over to his mother to live in a two-bedroom apart ment with her, her husband and possibly his sister. My son has told me that his mother, grandmother, and one uncle gave him beer and wine to drink. Drugs are a regular part of the family life as I tried to inform the courts in Florida, even going to the courthouse and pulling the conviction records myself, in cluding one on the mother. There is no way I can afford to turn over my son to this lifestyle until he is fourteen. This saga continues as my hearing is set for May 19th but I’m not fooling myself into believing any outcome will be to my son’s best interest. John Q.
