BROAD STREET EDENTON, N.C. 27932 Fish Fry, Food Sale A Fish Fry and a Food Sale will be held Saturday, May 14, at the Edenton United Methodist Church. The Food Sale will begin at 9:00. Fish plates will be served from 11:00 AM until 6:00 P.M. Tickets, which are $3.00, may be purchased in advance from Bill Zarbock, president of the United Methodist Men, or from any member of the United Methodist Men, or they may be purchased on Saturday at the church. Proceeds will go towards the building fund and other church related projects. Edenton-Chowan Recreation Report Youth Baseball Midget baseball and T-ball teams are now being chosen and their seasons will begin Tues. May 24 and Thurs. May 26 respectively. Registration is still open for Babe Ruth Baseball and Girls’ softball. The Babe Ruth clinic will be held May 17 at 6:30 at Hicks field. The Girls’ softball clinic will be held May 23 at 6:00 at Holmes field. Summer Soccer Any youth interested in par ticipating in a summer soccer league may register at the Recreation Department until May 20. The season will begin in June with most games played on Saturday mornings. Call or come by the Recrea tion Department for more information. Adult Softball League Ryland captured the Pre season tourney with an 8-4 win over Exxon. After 2 and a half innings and a tie score at 4-4 Ryland exploded for 4 runs in the bottom of the third to pull out the win. Ryland was led by Carroll Perry and Dickie Umphlett who had 2 hits each. Steve Taylor had 2 hits to lead Exxon. Other first round winners were Oakleaf, Busch, Texaco, PD, Chowan Credit Union A’s and Pizza Hut. Advancing to the final four along with Ryland and Exxon were Tex aco and Chowan Credit Union. Exxon slipped past Texaco 8-6 and Ryland ousted Chowan Credit Union 11-4 to set up the final game. The women’s softball season began this week with a preseason tournament. The championship game was held Tuesday night at 8:00. The regular season begins next week with games being played on Tuesday and Thurs day nights. Aerobic Exercise Class It’s time now to get in shape for the summer and warm weather and the best way to do it is to get involved in the aerobic exercise class at the Recreation Department. Sweet Potatoes The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced on April 25,1983 an offer to buy canned sweet potatoes pack ed in 1982 or later. Although a purchase of ap proximately 200,000 cases is anticipated, actual quantities purchased by USDA will de pend upon offers, prices and user requirements. Offers must be in by June 1, 1983. Shipments shall be made from August 1, 1983 through September 30, 1983. The N.C. Yam Commission has worked hard to get this supplemental purchase. This makes a total 752,000 cases from the 1982 crop of sweet potatoes for the child nutrition programs. More school children will get to enjoy delicious and nutritious North Carolina sweet potatoes. "What nobody seeks is rarely found.” Pestalozzi Gregory Overton Assigned To Keesler Airman Gregory Overton, son of Minnie Eggleston, 79 FaystonSt., Roxbury, Mass., has been assigned to Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., after completing Air Force basic training. During the six weeks at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organiza tion and customs and receiv ed special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree in applied science through the Community Col lege of the Air Force. The airman will now receive specialized Instruc tion in the administration field. His grandmother, Rosie Overton, resides on Route 3, Edenton. The airman is a 1977 graduate of John A.
