Schools The North Carolina Com munity Schools Program has benefited both the communi ty and the schools in a signifi cant number of ways. The community has benefited by expansion of opportunity for people of all ages to engage in learning, recreation, cultural and other events and ac tivities. There has been a co6t savings, because additional expenditures might have beat required to build or lease new facilities if school sites had not been available. Additional benefits to the community have included safe after school environments for children of working parents; cultural arts to enrich com munity life; and additional opportunities for young peo ple and adults to get to know each other and work together. There have also been direct benefits to the schools for the community schools program. There has been a return on tax dollars realized through the contributiuons of volunteers and donations of resources ranging from books and supplies to recreational, vocational, and educational equipment. In a real sense, the Community Schools pro gram is more than paying for itself, the traditional K-12 pro gram has been enriched through the development of community-based learning opportunities. Most important has been the improved quality of school-community relation ships and partnerships, resulting from the increased involvement of the communi ty in the schools. A feeling of ownership in the schools have resulted, and increased sup port from the community for the schools has been a natural outgrowth of the community schools program. The schools are an impor tant institution of the com munity designed to prepare our youth for the world in which they live.
