With all of our training, equipment, etc., we are totally helpless unless we can arrive to the place we are needed. Following are some examples of the directions we are sometimes given. They are, of course, ficticious, but however comical or far fetched they may seem, we often get directions less complete than these: (A) next door to John Doe - ’ Hurry; (B) Cape Colony, first green house; (c) John Doe’s uncle’s house Gliden Road; (d) third house past the store on Highway 32; (e) Mary Doe’s house in Center Hill, you were there last year. An alarming percentage of the population has never had the opportunity to give directions to their residence while under duress. Our school system holds regular fire drills - why? To teach people how to act “Just in case”. Nobody expects to meet an emergency situation head-on, but “Just in case”, we all have not only a need, but a serious responsibility to our loved ones to be as prepared as possible. This means having emergency numbers readily at hand, and being able to give directions clearly and accurately. Rescue Squad number is 482-4222. Know in which direction the emergency units assigned to your area are to be coming from (clear and accurate directions to your home from Unit No. 3 are in all probability totally useless from Unit 1). Learn how to give directions to your home by using outstanding landmarks, as well as a street name if you have one; i.e., using example (B) as given previously, the proper directions would be as follows: “My name is John Doe. My telephone number is 555-1212. I live in Cape Colony. Go through the main gate and keep straight until you reach the second street to the right. This is Locust Street. Turn to the right, and I live in the first green house on the right, midway of the block. I will have the porch light on.” This is the type of directions that can make the difference in an emergency. The personnel there are assuming dispatching duties in ad dition to their regular duties, and are to be com mended. It would however be more efficient, accurate and to the better of all concerned, if we had a “Central Dispatch System” as many other counties have, whereby there would be a trained professional to handle all the incoming traffic and in turn, dispatch all law enforcement, fire, rescue and other emergency units as needed. These personnel are trained to extract vital information from an excited caller which might have been otherwise overlooked, and thereby giving those vital “extra precious moments” which are sometimes so Thursday, May 19,1943 desperately needed. I submit the contents of this letter with all due respect to the citizens of our county, and we of the Edenton-Chowan Rescue Squad earnestly solicit their support and help in the future, as in the past. Respectfully, Chuck Noble, Chief Edenton-Chowan Rescue Squad Chowan Ruritan Club To Meet Trop Toppin, president of V the Chowan Ruritan Club, has announced the club will meet May 23, 1983 at the Chowan Home Demon stration Clubhouse. Due to Memorial Day the club meeting has been moved up one week. This is also Ladies Night.
