Mrs. Mary Moore Powell of
Winston-Salem and
Smithfield died May 20, after
a year of declining health.
She made her home with
her daughter and son-in-law,
Mr. & Mrs. J. D. Barnhill who
were former residents of
Edenton. They lived here
kJ from 1962 until 1967 when Mrs.
Barnhill was transferred
back to Winston-Salem with
R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.

Mrs. Powell was chosen
United Methodist Woman of
the Year in the state of North
Carolina and second runner
up in the nation in 1959.
David E. Boyce
David Ernest Boyce, 63 of
Route 3, died suddenly Sun
day at his home. A native of
Chowan County, he was the
son of the late Vandy and
Rosa Byrum Boyce and the
husband of Mrs. Eunice Chap
pell Boyce and was a Protes
tant. He was retired from the
U.S. Navy as a Chief
Machinist Mate after 22 years
of service and was employed
by the Holiday Inn in
Elizabeth City.
Besides his wife, surviving
are one daughter; Mrs. Con
nib B. Copeland of Route 1,
Edenton, 3 sons; David E.
Boyce, Jr., of Folkston, Ga.,
Ricky C. Boyce of Edenton
and Reggie T. Boyce of Cary,
N.C.; 5 sisters; Mrs. Roxie
Daniels of Colrain, Mrs.
Marie Matthews of Winfall.
Mrs. Edna Byrum of Tyner
and Mrs. Naomi Bunch of
Route 1, Edenton, 2 brothers;
Wilford Boyce of Roanoke
Rapids and Robert Boyce of
Belleville, 111., and 6
grandchildren.
Full Military Rites, were
accorded at the graveside in
Cedarwood Cemetery Tues
day at 2 P.M. by the U.S.
Naval Air Station in Norfolk.
Swindell Funeral Home
was in charge of
arrangements.
Emily S. Gooch
Mrs. Emily Smithson
Gooch, age 53, of 90 Nicholson
St., died Saturday in a
hospital.
A native of Norfolk, Va., she
was the wife of Lee Gooch and
a member of Central Baptist
Church.
Surviving besides her hus
band is one daughter, Mrs.
Marie G. Doughty of Eden
ton; three sons, Theodore
Lee Gooch 111 of Sioux City,
lowa, and Thomas Ray Gooch
and Jimmy Dee Gouch of
Portsmouth; one sister, Mrs.
Virginia M. Stancil of Nor
folk; two brothers, N.F.
Smithson of Virginia Beach,
Va.; and Robert L. Smithson
of Norfolk, Va.; and two
granddaughters.
Funeral services were held
Monday, May 23rd, at 2 P.M.
in the Central Baptist Church,
Portsmouth, by the Rev. U.G.
Robertson. Burial followed in
Riverside Memorial Park.

60, of Route 1, Hertford, died
Wednesday afternoon in the
Chowan Hospital.
A native of Perquimans
County she was the daughter
of the late Sidney Lee and
Mrs. Sallie Williams Long and
the wife of Wilma V. Brabble.
She was the retired manager
of the Perquimans County
High School lunchroom and
