Page 6-B 17 Study Wins Award A study of the North Carolina segment of U.S. 17 has won the 1983 Award for Engineering Excellence, in an annual statewide competi tion sponsored by the Con sulting Engineers Council of North Carolina. Kimley Horn and Associates, Inc., a Raleigh engineering and planning firm, has been cited by the state’s private engineering firms for outstanding work on the U. S. 17 Corridor Study. The study, sponsored by the N. C. Department of Transportation, examine the feasibility of improvements along the entire route of U.S. 17 in North Carolina, from the Virginia border to the South Carolina border. The department commis sioned the study with the goal of arriving at a phased im plementation program -a step-by-step plan for improv ing U.S. 17 beginning with those areas where need was greatest. North Carolina consulting engineers selected the study as the state’s entry in national competition. Kimley-Horn was cited for the combination of its t<jchnical engineering study of tine area’s transportation needs and its strong public fiarticipation program, which measured both rural and ur ban opinion and needs regar ding the four-laning of the corridor. Under the department’s direction, Kimley-Horn first educated the public on the types of four-laning im provements available, from a simple four lane with uncon trolled access to a controlled Card Os Thanks The family of the late Dorothy Booker would like to thank each and everyone of you for all acts of kindness shown to us. The firm then developed several alter natives for each segment of the highway before recom mending a specific alter native for implementation. Hie study also examined general features of the area that would be affected by changes to U.S. 17 - en vironmental and historical features, socio-economic and population factors, and plans for future development. In addition to technical ex cellence and strong public participation, the CEC also cited several unique aspects of the project - the unusual length of the corridor, the videotaping of the entire route in order to create a record for the study, and the attention devoted to the considerations of both local and interstate travel. t PUZZLED?
