ThmrMfcQ. June 2, IVKi Around The Chowan County Farms Murray L. (Ml«w Mast Chowan County melon farmers begin spraying for leaf diseases about two weeks late. This is assuming that the idea time to start spraying is the time tbe runners begin to form. s According to the answers received from the »wH f tamers 65% sprayed the first time when the cantaloupe and watermelon vines were begin ning to cover die ground. We feel sure that the effec tiveness of controlling Alter naria. Gummy Stem Blight. Downy Mildew and Thrac nose is substantially hurt by starting to spray at ground covering time. You can usually get one or two sprayings with ground equipment if you start at the time runners are just starting to form. We all know that ground equipment is more ef fective than aerial application. I doubt if you give the attention to your melon crops that you do to peanuts in controlling leaf-spot. 1 am confident that Leaf diseases are potentially more damaging to melons than leaf spots to peanuts. We had quite a few watermelon fields for which no melons were harvested from last year. I feel that spraying melon crops is just as impor tant as spraying peanuts. Let me get back to the watermelon questionnaire results. Bravo was named by far the most number of times (73%) as the fungicide used. Difoltan, Manxate and Diathane M 45 were used some. Os the farmers who sprayed two and three times were the most often given times of ap plication. A lot of years three times is all the application that is needed. We are glad to report that over half of watermelon farmers answering the ques tionnaire sprayed at least one time. We feel that applying a fungicide is more important than what material you use. Os those spraying about 64% sprayed only one time. We are sure that you cannot get the job done by spraying only one time! No wonder we had field completed ruined!! And of course we know that many of our farmers did not spray at all! Most watermelon farmers who sprayed for leaf disease, quit spraying about two weeks before harvest. Most watermelon farmers thought leaf disease hurt them. Last year watermelons were hurt more than can taloupes by leaf diseases. This is not ususally true, but the rains came lata in the season than it does sometimes. We know of no variety of watermelon with resistance to leaf disease. For can taloupes there are a couple of varieties, Summet and Satkoy, that apparently have resistance to these leaf diseases. THE CHOWAN HERALD About 25% of the watermelons farmers reported rotten bottom' disease. Our observation was that this disease was not a major problem last year. The control measure used for con trolling Southern Stem Rot in peanuts will help control Rot ten Botom in Watermelons. Varieties with Fusarium Wilt disease included Jubilee and Crimson Diamond.
