The handcrafts and Tar Heel specialties, given to Von Brand by the Wayne County l) Extension Homemakers, were just a few of the memen tos and memories she will take home after participating in the “AdoptA-Student” pro gram following the end of the spring semester in May. The program was spon sored fay the N.C. Extension Ikwwmahnr Association and the International Student Ad visor’s Office at NCSU. * Through the program, students from Chile, Peru, Venetuela, Mali, Malaysia and Taiwan were given the opportunity to experience life in rural North Carolina for ’ Tailored to each student's academic interests, “Adopt- A-Stadent” allowed students I) to interact with residents of participating counties and observe agricultural prac tices and techniques as well as the social and cultural aspects of their host county. In exchange for the learn ing experience, students shared the customs and culture of their home coun tries with extension p homemakers, civic groups and host families. Von Brand, a one-year Rotary scholar studying forestry genetics, said she carried a map with her all the time so she could show the many groups and people she met the exact location of her hometown Quilpue. She said, “To speak about a Chile three times a day is one thing, but to eat Wayne Coun ty home cooking three times a day is something rise! 1 always tried everything, and it was fantastic!’’ The food also was good in Buncombe County acsgrding toSmba TraoreofiggdiftfS staftnt in crop science from Mali, Africa. He said he en r joyed being able to observe a working American farm for the first time while visiting Buncombe County.* As a former extension agent in Mali, a country where the land is worked .by hand, Traore said he was im pressed with the Buncombe County communities and the effect of the N.C. Agricultural Extension Service network on the implementation of new techniques. Over 1,000 North Caroli nians were reached through last year’s “Adopt-A- Student" program which in volved eight NCSU students and five counties. This year, the program grew to involve IS counties and 30 students from NCSU, East Carolina University, UNC-Chariotte, Central Piedmont Communi ty College and Meredith College. Juba Seibert, international chairman of the North Carlina Extension Homemakers Association, said, “My goal in creating this | program is for everyone reached by the experience to rwakae the i—njme of the human family”.
