HOSPITAL INSTALLS NEW PHONE!—The receptionist,
shown above at Chowan Hospital, is answering the hospital’s
new phone system which was installed this week. The installa
tion of the new phone system may have inconvenienced patrons
of the hospital earlier this week, but the new system promises
to give citizens of Chowan County better service in the long run.

Hospital Gets New Phone System
Chowan Hospital entered
another phase of growth last
week as Electronic Engineer
ing of Norfolk, Virginia, in
stalled an electronic
telephone system at the
hospital.
The previous system, which
was installed when the
hospital opened at its present
location in October 1970, had
met its maximum growth.

class of “human" propelled
vehicles. The race is design
ed to offer competition in two
catagories:
(1) Shortest Elapsed Time
- Entries completing the
course in the shortest period
of time.
(2) Most Humorous • En
tries offering the most enter
taining design and/or
operation.
The vehicles will be on
display at 11:00 A.M. on the
Green in front of John A.
Holmes High School along
Broad Street. The celebration
will begin at 1:30 P.M. from
the display area and parade
down Broad Street. The
vehicles will make a left on
Water Street and enter the
water in front of the cannons.
They will be required to pass
around a marker in the water
and back to the cannons. The
awards ceremony will follow
the race.
Crews are advised to con
sider the steepness of the
area, from land to water, in
front of the cannons on Water
Street, in their mechanical
and safety designs. The race
will be from a standing start
with the vehicle in a static,
motionless state. Push starts
are allowed, but all “pushers”
must accompany the vehicle
throughout the race. In case
of rain, the race will still be
run because you are going to
get wet anyway.
Race rules and regulations
and entry forms are available

THE CHOWAN HERALD
Even before the new building
program was begun, the
hospital had installed the
maximum limit of telephones
which the system could
handle.
When the new beds were of
ficially opened, no lines were
available to add telephones to
these new rooms. Also,
various departments within
the hospital were unable to
have an adequate number of
telephones.
The new electronic system
is capable of providing ser
vice for up to 360 individual
lines. It can be programmed
to provide options that made
communications more effi
cient. Just one of the many
features which will prove to
be cost effective is the ability
for an employee working out
side his or her normal work
station to punch in a code on
their telephone and all calls
will automatically be
transferred to an area at
which they will be working for
that particular day. This will
eliminate another employee
having to take messages or
manually transfer the calls.
The new telephone system
was officially installed on
