With the issuance of indictments by the grand jury last week-against Green, and new ones against Sen. R.C. Soles—a lot of lawmakers in Raleigh were really in a quandry. Some of the senators may have been backing off slight ly in their staunch defense of the lieutenant governor. It wasn’t that anyone was say ing anything bad about Green, they just weren’t say ing anything at all. As Green was being finger printed at the courthouse, lips were being sealed at the legislature. “Yeah, some folks are uneasy. The atmosphere is bound to have changed,” said one senator. In fact, the most pronounc ed change was that so few people were willing to talk (bout the continuing Colcor troubles of Green and Soles. Usually, people are more than willing to talk in Raleigh-- about anything. Os course, from the lieute nant governor’s office, it’s “no comment.” The troubles are only now beginning to have an affect on legislative business, not necessarily because of the lieutenant governor. Still, one senator did remark last Fri day that Green did seem to be “out of the chamber (the Senate chamber) right much.” The real affect of the trou ble might be an increased anxiety to adjourn, even more so than usual, in the Senate. “Most of the people I know just want to wrap things up and get out of town,” was the way one legislator put it. The House is apparently counting on that Senate anx iety to get out of town. Both the Senate and House have put together tax in crease packages to raise money for state employee raises and a host of other, smaller expenditures. The Green Probe problem is that the two plans are substantially different. The House would increase alcohol taxes over 20 per cent and eliminate the sales tax re fund for merchants. The House version would also add a 2 cents per mile “weight distance” tax on heavy trucks. The Senate version has none of that, and even some House members agree the Senate bill is better. “I hope we lose on this one,” said one distraught representative who was strong-armed two weeks ago by the House Airman Overton Is AF Graduate Airman Ist Class Gregory Overton, grandson of Rosie Overton, Rural Route 3, Edenton, has graduated from the U.S. Air Force ad ministrative specialist course at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss. Their hope is to hold out until the Senate gives up and agrees to the House package. Senators say that won’t happen.
