The M a i I b a q /JIN IV Tornado Week "' Iflf! 1 Dear Sir: s ') March 2 through March 8 has been designated as Tornado Awareness Week in North Carolina. As in the past, this week has been set aside as the period in which North Carolina citizens should make a special effort to become familiar with tornado safety rules. We are now entering the most dangerous time of the year for tor nadoes. In the past most tor nadoes have struck North Carolina in March, April and May. Since these dangerous storms have left few North Carolina counties untouched, I feel that now is a good time to prepare for this safety exercise. Tornado Awareness Week is an naully sponsored by the North Carolina Division of Emergency Management, the National Weather Service, the North Carolina Department of Public In struction, and the Chowan Coun ty Office of Emergency Manage ment. These agencies urge all North Carolinians to participate in the statewide tornado drill scheduled for Wednesday March 5. It is designed to teach citizens as much as possible about these storms should they strike the Chowan County area. We at the Chowan County Emergency Management Office will be happy to work with any person or group that wants to learn more about tornadoes and how to survive them. Douglas L. Belch, Director Chowan County Emergency Management 482-4365 Office Phone Proposed Budget Dear Sir: I am deeply concerned about the projected impact of the 1987 proposed executive budget on the North Carolina Agricultural Ex tension Service. President Reagan has proposed a budget for 1987 that will impose serious fiscal restraints by proposing massive 54% cuts in federal funding. This will mean a reduction in person nel and services. As a farmer’s wife and exten sion homemaker, I indeed see the importance of extension pro grams to individuals, family, community and county. With a budget reduction this would put more stress on the rural people if they did not have someone to con tact for encouragement, informa tion and advice. Through extension programs, information is available to all peo ple on all economic levels. Immediate action is needed since Congress is currently preparing budget legislation. You may wish to write your' con gressmen, stating your concern with the president’s proposal to cut federal extension funds by 54%, by asking for support in restoring extension funding to the 1985 level. The extension service is the on ly network with the capacity to gather and disseminate informa tion to every county in the nation. Without federal support, the na tionwide character of this service would change - maybe not exist. I ask your support in writing your congressmen by March 10, expressing your concern for ex tension programs. People in Chowan County benefit each day from the expertise, knowledge and cooperation of our extension personnel. Sincerely, Mary Julia Parrish, Chairman Chowan County Extension Advisory Council Black History Dear Sir: Like all of its special show-case exhibits, the Shepard-Pruden Library’s recognition of Black History Month is well done. And the newspaper is to be commend ed for its photographic coverage of these exhibits.
