(Staff photo by Gail Mize) Symphony performance outstanding By L.P. ilornthal Like old friends who seldom get the chance to enjoy each other, the North Carolina Symphony and Chowan County were happily reunited Thursday night at Swain Auditorium. Together with the Choral Society and the Holmes High School Concert Choir, the Symphony produced a fine even ing to the joy of all who heard them. The orchestra opened its part of the concert with the lively and always crowd-pleasing Overture to “The Italian Girl In Algiers” by Rossini. The Gabriel Faure “Pavane", with the orchestra’s muted brass and well-disciplined strings, found many converts in the audience to this seldom heard tone poem. Even more unfamiliar was the Ralph Vaughan-Williams Suite from “The Wasps”. This exciting piece requires some listening as well as some background infor mation. Vaughan-Williams wrote this overture and other program music for the Greek comedies of ARistophanes. “The Wasps” is a satire on the Greek pasion of litigation. These interesting varia tions, like most of Vaughan Williams music, are difficult to perform and require attentive ears. The North Carolina or chestra handled the tone and time changes with facility. Following intermission, the two choral groups together with the orchestra presented “Dixit Dominus” from the lovely vespers of Mozart. The quartet was per formed beautifully by Lynn Cale, Sarah Cooper, Tony Evans and Kevin Strother. These four, along with the entire chorale group, were well received, and the presentation showed the result of many hours of arduous practice. The Mozart choral piece was followed by two examples of John Continued On Page 8-A Revivals underway The largest evangelistic effort »ver made in the Southern Baptist [Convention will begin in March, 1986. “Good News, America, God Loves You” revivals will be held in all 50 states with some 30,000 SBC churches participating. Volunteer honored f Meals on Wheels has honored one of their volunteers for her work in delivering meals to shutins. Mrs. G«rry (Cecil) Fry was honored as ihe Volunteer of the Month for January. She was recognized “for your hours of dedicated service.” With the program for over a year, Mrs. Fry said that she first heard about Meals on Wheels through friends who she enrolled with. She said that she “already knew” some of the people she delivers to and “enjoys meeting new friends.” Mrs. Fry delivers meals to 10 or 12 houses on her delivery days us ing her own car. “At some homes I deliver two meals,” she said. “I believe the home-delivered meal program to be a very worth while service and I am happy to be a part of it. I would encourage more people to volunteer, as more volunteers can always be used,” she concluded. When the brain receives the image, it is the result of what is seen by both eyes fused into a single image. This is known as binocular single vision. But when one eye is out of line, the child will see two objects. One image will show the object in its proper position. The misaligned eye will show the object displaced or off center, a phenomenon known as double vision. A child who experiences double vision will compensate for it by ignoring the image received by the misaligned eye. He suppresses the disturbing second image.
