The political newcomer will face incumbent Commissioner Em | mett Winbome in the March 15 f Democratic Primary. The winner of that primary con test -will be on the ballot in the No vember General Election along side Republican Ron Cummings. | Donald Faircloth Jr. filed last week as a Demo cratic candidate for the at-large seat. Republican Brian Ferraraccio also is running for the at-large seat. Derrick Wad sworth filed Mon day as a Demo FAIRCLOTH JR. WADSWORTH Democrat, is un opposed in his re election bid in the 3rd District. White, a po litical newcomer, said he is up to the challenge of running for coun tv commissinnpr cratic candidate in the 2nd District and Patti F. Kersey filed Monday as a Republican candidate in that district. Commissioner Greg Bonner, a “I’ve never held any political seat before,” White said. “Now that I’m retired I have some free time on my hands. I’ve always been willing to help other people. If I’m elected I really think I could be helpful to a lot of people.” White, 69, is retired from Unit ed Piece and Dye Works. He also worked 18 years with the N.C. Department of Transportation and six months with the Chowan County Sheriffs Office. He is a member of Warren’s Grove Baptist Church and Oak Leaf Lodge. “I admit this would be a new experience for me,” White said. “I love a challenge. My papa always told me, ‘Son, whatever you do in life, do your best.’ I’m a candidate for Chowan County Commission 1st District. I really would apprecii ate you support.” ! Wife donating kidney to husband BY REBECCA BUNCH Staff Writer Many people believe that Christ mas is a time for miracles, ff so, then Dwayne Long got his a little early. Long, who was diagnosed with dia betes 38 years ago at age 10, is suffer ing from kidney failure. He has been on the transplant list for a new kidney for the past two and a half years and on dialysis at home since March of this year. king, a mechanic, said that his illness prevents him from working much, but that he tries to work one or two days a week to help support his family. But all that could change once his wife Amy donates one of her healthy kidneys to him in surgery scheduled to take place on Jan. 21 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. Amy said when she was deemed a suitable match and asked if she would agree to donate a kidney to save her husband’s life, she didn’t hesitate. “1 love him,” she said simply. “Arid he would do the same for me.” Amy, who has worked at Vidant Women’s Care in Edenton for about a dozen years as a medical assistant, said she is hopeful tire surgery will give her husband’s health the boost See TRANSPLANT, 6A OULJIVII I I tU rHU I Dwayne and Amy Long Preservationists interested in Walker building BY REGGIE PONDER Editor A local preservationist last week made a case for finding a feasible use for the two-story former D.F. Walk 6 ©2009 The Chowan Herald All Rights Reserved er High School building on North Oakiun Street. “We have been able to do everything else in Eden ton,” said John Morehead, an attorney and expert in historic preservation pro cedures, during a meeting Wednesday of the study panel on the future of the former D.F. Walker High School building. Morehead, who Is not a member of tire study panel but attended the meeting alongside Claudia Deviney of Preservation North Car olina, said the way things ;ire done in Edenton Ls tire community sees a build ing that needs to be saved and then finds a use that will be appropriate and will also provide adequate fund ing for the restoration and maintenance of the struc ture. The community has saved everything else in Edenton, and now needs to save the Walker High School building, too, More head said. He said the new use for the building needs to be fully compatible with College of The Albemarle and have a nice collegiate look. Belinda Respass, who manages the theater for owner Bob Kroclunal, said that the film opened to a sold-out crowd and that at tendance had continued to be strong through the week end.
