Santa Claus comes to town BY FRANCES JORDAN Correspondent Recently Santa Claus paid a visit to Nothin &lsquo:Fancy Café where a party was being given for the blind and the VIPs (Visually Impaired) of Chowan County. This is an annual event hosted by the Rocky Hock Lions Club. Upon arriving, the \iPs were treated to appetizers, then a wonder ful buffet dinner. After din ner, Santa Claus made his appearance. Each VIP was Called to the front to sit on Santa&rsquo.s knee and tell him what they wanted for Christmas. While they were visit ing with Santa, Lion Lloyd Evans was busy taking pictures. Each VIP will be given a copy of the picture of themself with Santa. Simla also gave each VIP a gift. After Santa left, the VIPs w ere treated to music of the season by Anthony Horton (aka Blind Tony) playing his flute. Then door prizes were given to each YIP by the Rocky Hock Li ons Club, including a large print calendar donated by Lion Ricky Nixon of Nixon Fishery Inc. Lions welcome members at Christmas party BY JOHN MITCHENER Correspondent Monday evening, Dec. 14, the Edenton Lions wel comed four new members making it a very special Christmas party indeed. Lion Craig Miller spon sored Linda Tiller, a wid ow. She decided to join m appreciation of how meaningful Lionism was to her husband, Mace Til ler. Ronnie Rountree was sponsored by Lion Jack Parker. Roll and Rene Jackson were sponsored by Lion John Guard. Each received the appropriate pin. All of this followed a moving welcome to Lion ism by Past District Gov ernor Gwen White, can didate for International Director, who shared stories from this year's fishing tournament to the edification of all. Each new Lion received the new Centennial Di ploma of membership. Tumultuous applause fol lowed. Past District Governor Rhett White recognized Lion Jack Parker with a special chevron and cer tificate signifying 45 years of Lions service. White re called his youth as a mem ber of 4-H in which he was instructed by Jack Parker, who at that time was an extension agent. “Too Sharp to be Flat," a barbershop quartet from tin1 Albemarle Sounds, ably sang carols and other favorites to the delight of all. John Caveney, Jeff Knox, < ill Burroughs and Ronnie Rountree were outstanding. Our Brighter Visions campaign continued as departing Lions picked up Christmas bags of fruit to deliver to the visually impaired. One recipient thanked us by giving two pairs of glasses for recon ditioning and use by oth ers. This has beeit a trying year. But “we are like tea bags whose true strength comes out only when we are in hot water". Lions Serve! May it ever be so!
