DIRECTOR Continued from 1A Their dedication and the increased generosity of the community - anu particu larly the public schools - has enabled the Pantry to cope with a client list that has virtually exploded and the establishment of a Book Bag Buddies program that allows students in need to p take nutritious food home to eat over the weekend. Wells said when he first took over as director of the Pantry nine years ago they were serving 75-90 people a month. Today that num ber Ls between 2-50-300 as people have lost jobs and not been able to find work, lea-ving their families uncer tain at times where they will find their next meal. As the need has grown. Wells said, so have the num ber of fundraisers being done to help the Pantry keep sufficient food on hand to feed the hungry. Among the fundraising efforts are the Lock Up Hunger campaign in the Edenton-Chowan Schools as well as an annual dinner at the Nothin’ Fancy Cafe and Market that is hosted by the Unitarian Uni versalist group, the Method ist Market carried out by the women’s group at Edenton I :nited Methodist Church, and SOUPer Bowl parties at various churches in town. “As the need has grown, there has been this tremen dous response that sustains us,” Wells said. And while he loves that people care so much, Wells said that for him personally the most rewarding part of his job - and the memory he will carry with him - is the look on the faces of children he has seen. “Some people pull up here and they don’t know where else to turn,” he said. ‘To see the look on their child’s face when they leave here with food that will sus tain them, that means every thing to me.” Wells said when he began his job as director of the Pantry he made a list of all the things he wanted to ac complish. Today the items have been checked off and he is walking away content in the knowledge that he did everytliing he set out to do. Now it's ('olemans turn. “I just felt it was time to have someone else come in with a fresh vision :uid to carry things to the next lev el,” Wells said in announc ing his retirement.
