2A THE CHOWAN HERALD, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 3,2018 Carroll E. lynch, Sr. EDENTON - Carroll Edward lynch, Sr., 70, of 201 lynch Town Road, passed away Thursday, De cember 28, 2017, in his home. Mr. lynch was born in Chowan County on Feb ruary 14, 1947, and was the son of the late Charles Spurgeon, Sr. and Thelma Virginia Goodwin lynch. The owner of Carroll’s Cabinet Shop, he was also a commercial fisherman. A member of Rocky Hock Baptist Church and its Senior Choir, he had served six years in the United States Coast Guard. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Asbell. Surviving are two daughters, Karen lynch Wende and husband George of Buda, TX and An gela Tynch Lilley and husband Jeffrey of Washing ton, NC; a son, Carroll Edward “C.J.” lynch, Jr. and his fiance Tina of Goldsboro; three sisters, Mabel McGann of Bowie, MD, Jeanette White of Colerain, and Margie Fulghum of Newport News, VA; four brothers, Spurgeon lynch, Jr., Stanley lynch, Au brey lynch, and Ricky lynch, all of Edenton; and five grandchildren, Brett, Virginia, Andrew, James, and Elizabeth. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan uary 3, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. in Rocky Hock Baptist Church, and will be conducted by his pastor, Dr. James Horton. The burial will be in the lynch Fam ily Cemetery. Friends may join the family in the vestibule of the church immediately following the service, or all other times at the residence. Jethro HERTFORD - Murray Edward Jethro, 84, of 210 Soundward Lane, passed away Wednesday, De cember 27, 2017, in his home. Mr. Jethro was born in Chowan County on Au gust 15, 1933, and was the son of the late Charlton B. and Edna Goodwin Jethro. He faithfully attend ed Island Christian Fellowship. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Elsie Toppin, and by a brother, Delvin Jethro. Surviving are two sisters, Ruby Copeland and Evelyn Dail, both of Hertford; two brothers, Melvin Jethro of Corapeake and Phillip Jethro of Eden ton; and several nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. Funeral services were held Monday, January 1, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Miller Funer al Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and were conducted by his pastor, The Rev. Ismael Melandez. A private burial followed in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends joined the family in the funeral home following the chapel service. Bev Perdue to run the Department of Crime Con trol and Public Safety from 2009 to 2011 and then DPS as it exists today, which merged public safety, crime control, corrections and juvenile justice. He ran the department until 2013, when he was appointed as a Special Superior Court judge handling cases across the state, according to DPS spokeswoman Pam Walker. Obituaries Kenneth Ray “Buck” Buchanan ELIZABETH CITY - Kenneth Ray “Buck” Bu ¬ chanan, 71, of 694 Methodist Church Road, Eliz ¬ abeth City, NC died Thursday, December 28, 2017 at his residence. A native of Indiana, he was born in Greencas tle on October 5, 1946 to the late Sylvester Bu chanan and Texas Lou ise Buchanan and was the husband of Joleen McKinley Buchanan of the residence. Buck loved his God, his coun try, and his family. He served his country hon ¬ orably for twenty-four years in the US Navy retir- ing as a Master Chief. He was a devoted member of the First Church of Nazarene serving in many roles including finance, grounds committees, and Sunday School Superintendent. He was instrumen tal in starting and leading the local division of the Fishers of Men National Tournament Trail and a long-standing member of the Elizabeth City Bass Masters. He was a loving and devoted husband, fa ther, and grandfather. In addition to his wife, Joleen, he is survived by two sons, David Buchanan and wife Ann of Eden ton and Michael Buchanan of Virginia Beach; two granddaughters, Kati Mapp and Jessica Buchan an; and two brothers, David Martin Buchanan and wife Heather of Grover, NC and Dennis Buchanan of Janesville, CA A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Tues- day, January 2, 2018 at First Church of the Naza rene with Pastor Kristopher Adams officiating. Moseley Street, Edenton, NC, died Monday, De cember 25, 2017, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport, NC. Mr. Bond was born in Chowan County on May 20, 1923, and was the son of the late Millard F. and Hettie Hudgins Bond. Retired from the United States Postal Service, he had served as the Postmaster of the Edenton Office, and earlier had worked with the Bank of Edenton (later Peoples Bank), and as manager of the Eden ton Savings & Loan. A veteran of World War H, he served as a tail-gun ner in numerous sorties over Germany with the 385th Bombardment Group of the Eighth Air Force. .In 2016, he received the National Order of the Legion of France for his service during the War. A faithful member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, he had served as the treasurer for many years, taught Sunday School, and had been a mem ber of its Vestry. Living in Edenton his entire life, he served his community with distinction, having been the Edenton Town Treasurer, serving as a member of the Edenton School Board, the Chow an Hospital Board, the Edenton Development Commission, and the Chamber of Commerce. A member and Past President of the Edenton Rotary Club, he was a Paul Harris Fellow. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Alice Weadon Bond; and by his siblings, Doris Smith, John Bond, and Edith Nixon. Surviving are his sons and their wives, James, Jr. and Lucy Bond of Morehead City, Millard and Teresa Bond of Edenton, and Richard and Kathy Bond of Dunn; seven grandchildren, Sarah Caro line Bond, Michael Marino Bond and wife Karena, Joseph Cannarella Bond, Heather Bond DeShields, Jennifer Bond Thompson, Elizabeth Lee Bond, and Judith Reynolds Bond; and three great-grandchil dren, Brooklyn Combs, Jabez DeShields, and Lau rel Bond. Given Young once led DPS, The Daily Advance asked Walker what con vinced Hooks he could be a change agent for pris ons. Walker responded that Young oversaw efforts to consolidate the new DPS, and reiterated he shares Hooks’ vision that safety and security are the top priority. Walker also reported that Young will be paid the same as Guice — $132,559 a year. A critic of the prison sys tem, Rep. Bob Steinburg, R-Chowan, asked about Young’s appointment, said Friday he might be a “fine jurist,” but he didn’t con sider him qualified for the position. “Nothing positive really happened under his watch” at DPS, Steinburg claimed. “We’re just recycling ‘good of boys.’” He also criticized top leadership within prison management as including too many political appoin tees — including Guice, who was appointed under a Republican administra tion, he said — who lacked prison experience and weren’t qualified for their jobs. He said he didn’t con sider Hooks qualified to be DPS secretary, either. DPS’biography of Hooks notes his background is as a special agent and later’ assistant director over the professional standards di vision for the State Bureau of Investigation. Eugene Paul King EDENTON - Eugene Paul King, 67, of 140 Os prey Drive, passed away on Thursday, December 28,2017, in his home where he was surrounded by his family. Mr. King was born in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PA on November 14,1950, and was the son of the late Orion Morris and Margaret Mary Kacsu- ta King. He was a graduate of Waynesburg College with a Bachelor of Science degree in History Edu cation. Mr. King was a retired Pennsylvania State Trooper where he attained the rank of Corporal, and served on the Special Emergency Response Team (S.E.R.T.). After that distinguished career, he worked in Iraq for two years as a private con tractor. His life’s hobbies were exercise and fitness, cooking, motorcycling, and traveling. Surviving are his wife of nearly 35 years, Clara Buchanan King; his daughter, Carrie Malkmus and husband Peter, and their children Dylan, Zackary, Cade, Luke, and Faith, of Harriman, TN, and his daughter, Andrea Buchanan of Waynesburg, PA; his sister, Marilyn King of Ocala, FL; two broth ers, Thomas King and wife Carole of Louisville, KY and Timothy King of Waynesburg; and two neph ews, Ryan King and wife Nikki, and their daugh ter Grace, of Buffalo, NY, and Thad King and wife Mallery, and their children, Noah, Dominic, and Leila, of Waynesburg. A memorial service was held Tuesday, January 2, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. in the Edenton United Method ist Church and was officiated by The Rev. W. Chris topher Aydlett. Friends joined the family in the fel lowship of the church immediately following the service, and all other times at the residence. The burial service will be held Saturday, Jan uary 6 at 11:00 a.m. in the Oakmont Cemetery in Waynesburg.
