Candidates begin filing for elections

Candidates for sheriff,
county commissioner and
clerk of court filed Monday,
the first day of filing for the
May primaries.
Dwayne Goodwin, the
county’s Democratic sheriff,
filed for re-election — he
was the first out of the gate
for those filing for office in
Chowan County.
“I love my job. I love com
ing to work everyday,” said
Goodwin, who has served
three terms as sheriff.

filed for District 1, Seat 2 on
the county Board of Com
missioners. Jeff Smith, a
Democrat, is running for

date to file for Jones’ seat
in North Carolina’s 3rd
Congressional District.
Elsewhere on the first
day of filing for state and
federal offices, both state
Rep. Bob Steinburg, R-
Chowan, and Dare County
businessman Clark Twid-
dy filed as expected for
the open seat in the newly
drawn Senate District 1.
The 11-county district in
cludes all area counties.

murder in

Taylor, 51, of East
Church Street, Edenton,
was gunned down in the
200 block of East Church
Street and later died of his
injuries at Vidant-Chowan
Hospital.
Wiggins is being held at

bond. His case has been re
scheduled to May 14.

John Lee-Allen Gay, 55, of
Edenton is charged with
possession with intent to
distribute of a controlled
substance — a gram of
cocaine — and driving
while impaired after being
arrested in January 2017 in
the parking lot of a Virginia
Road business. Also, Gay
is charged with second
degree exploitation of a
minor, third degree sexual
exploitation of a minor
and soliciting a child by
computer to commit a
sexual act when he was ar
rested in March last year in
Edenton. The drug and sex
crime charges stem from
a North Carolina State
Bureau of Investigation
undercover investigation
initiated in January 2017.
Gay’s case has been re
scheduled for May 14.

Stephen Patrick, 23, of
Edenton pleaded guilty
to misdemeanor larceny
for stealing a Playstation
and two firearms. He was
sentenced to 45 days in jail
(suspended) along with 24
months unsupervised pro
bation and restitution.
Jonathan Welch, 30, of
Edenton pleaded guilty
to threatening an officer
of the court and larceny.
