WATER Continued from 4B partment of Environmen tal Quality’s Advisory re mains in effect because the town’s drinking water is in violation of state law be cause it contains elevated levels of a chemical linked to bladder and other forms of cancer. According to Town' Man ager Anne Marie Knighton, Edenton is expected to continue to be in violation of the state drinking water standards until May 2019 when upgrades are com pleted to one of the town’s water treatment plants. Edenton officials noti fied 2,107 water customers in December that its drink ing water contains elevated levels of trialomethanes, or THMs, a chemical by- product that forms when chlorine is used to disin fect drinking water. According to Knighton, water samples collected during the time period that ended in September from one or more the town’s sampling sites showed THM concentrations ex ceeding the maximum al lowable under state law. The site with the high est average level of total THMs had a concentration of 0.194 milligrams per liter — twice the average standard of .080 mg/L. In addition, water sam ples collected during the time period that ended in December from one or more sites again showed THM concentrations ex ceeding the standard, and the site with the highest average level of total THMs with a concentration of 0.197 mg/L — .down from 0.222 mg/L from the last reading in March, but still nearly three times the aver age. Exposure to THMs may pose an increased risk of cancer, according to the National Drinking Water Clearinghouse. THMs are linked to bladder cancer as well as to damage to the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, and central nervous sys tem. Two THMs — chloro form and dibromochloro- methane — are carcino gens; and another THM, bromodi-chloromethane, has been identified as a mu tagen, which alters DNA Mutagens are considered to affect the genetics of future generations in addition to being carcinogenic. A letter sent to the town’s water customers in December said there is no need to boil water or take other corrective actions. However, anyone with specific health concerns should consult a doctor. The letter said anyone with a severely compro mised immune system,' or who has an infant or is pregnant or elderly should seek advice from a health care provider. If the THM levels had posed an emergency, cus tomers would have been notified within 24 hours, the letter said. All towns and cities are required by the state to routinely monitor for the presence of contaminates such as THM in drinking water. Knighton said Edenton has been exceeding the total THMs maximum con taminant level since 2015, when state rules changed. The town has been noti fying water customers of the violations as well as Edenton’s plan of action to bring the water system back into compliance. Because Edenton has been complying with the requirements and been sending public notification to their customers, DEQ has not issued any penal ties for the maximum con taminant level violations at this time. MENTORS Continued from 4B share their questions and chal lenges about growing up as a boy and give them valuable guidance on achieving their potential in life,” Brothers said. “The mentors teach them things that they don’t get from their mothers, and the boys seem to be more open with the male mentors. “ The Brotherhood Club en courages its youth to better themselves in many ways that guide them into adulthood. “In our meetings, we teach them to be responsible and encour age self-respect. The boys do community service, such as making special breakfasts for our senior veterans, and they comply with a strict dress code as well. All. activities are geared to enhancing their lives and preparing for their future.” Currently, 10 boys are en rolled in the program and 22 others are on the waiting list. The Fannie A Parker Wom an’s Club also has developed a Girls Club in parallel with the Brotherhood Club. Both groups prepare for events and competitions with the district and state chapters of The Na tional Association of Colored Women’s and Youth Clubs. Brothers has an extensive history of volunteerism, hav ing served in many organi zations over the years. She received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Eden ton-Chowan Chamber of Commerce in 2012. This effort to raise the dignity and self-re spect of our young people in our community is such a noble mission, and Brothers, with the Fannie A Parker Woman’s Club, has taken leadership in this effort. “Essentially our Brother hood Club’s mission is to help young males to develop a posi tive attitude about themselves through cultural enrichment and community service to be come responsible adults for the next generation,” she said.
