Marshall’s Anti-Counterfeiting Task Force in Charlotte. On Jan. 10, NBA Trademark Inves tigator Wayne Grooms requested as sistance in working the NBA All-Star Basketball event being held in Char lotte during Valentine’s Day week- end Feb. 14-17, at various locations throughout the city. The task force, in conjunction with several other agencies, conducted an operation targeting counterfeit merchandise, tickets and other sales of illegal goods and criminal activi ties. On Feb. 15, they met at noon at the Central Division Team Office, at 119 E. 7th St., Suite 2B, in order for all agencies to meet each other and get on the same page. Most officers/ agents were in plain clothes for the event. Manning EDENTON - Edward Nelson “Pete” Manning, 89, of 216 West Eden Street, passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2019 in his home. Mr. Manning was born in Cumberland County on November 8, 1929, and was the son of the late James C. and Eva Averitt Manning. He had retired from The Chowan Herald af ter more than 50 years of employment. During his tenure as linotype operator, general man ager, and publisher, he The NBA officials recognized that during the All-Star weekend events, there would be a large crowd and po tential issues with counterfeit tickets and merchandise. They asked for as sistance during the event. Members of the task force routinely identify scalpers and merchants selling ille gal products during the games, which are from across the United States. A compliance check/enforcement action was conducted around the uptown Charlotte Business District, Spectrum Arena area and various locations throughout the city We checked the parking lots, streets and businesses areas for vendors that were selling counterfeit merchan dise. We worked from noon, until midnight each day. We were divided into various teams of agents, inves tigators and legal staff during this event. Counterfeit NBA items seized dur ing the event, with MSRP values: 780 T-shirts, $24,180; 12 hats, $360; 88 game jerseys, $7,600; 280 buttons, $4,200; 154 necklaces, $2,310; 34 key chains, $510; three sweat suits, $600; 100 posters, $1,500; and seven coun terfeit tickets, $1,750. Non-NBA Counterfeit items were also seized, which included various other trademarks with MSRP values: 52 handbags, $31,200; 21 wallets, $4,200; 18 belts, $3,600; six watches, $1,200; 14 T-shirts, $520; and three pairs of shoes, $900. Chowan County Sheriff’s Office Incidents A report of larceny was made on Feb. 13 at 315 Manteo Trail. A report of larceny was made on Feb. 15 at 3944 Virginia Road. Crimewatch A reports of assault with a deadly weapon and simple assault was made Feb. 16 at 105 Myrtle Drive. Arrests David Scott Sengebusch, of Deans Farm Road, Chowan County, was arrested on Feb. 14 on charges of as ¬ sault on a female and stalking. Melissa Kay Cohoon, of Virginia Road, Perquimans County, was ar rested on Feb. 15 on a charge of worth less checks. Brett Avery Nichols, of Chowan Coun ty, was arrested Feb. 19 on a charge of failure to appear, child support court. ELECTIONS Continued from 1A the 2nd ward seat and the Mayor’s seat. To date, the announced candidates for Edenton Mayor are Councilman Jimmy Stallings and local businesswoman Jacqueline Hardy-Lassiter. Hack High, a local attorney, has an nounced he plans to run for Stallings’ seat. In related campaign news, a long list of candi dates have announced their intentions to file for the 3rd congressional district that was left vacant by the death of Congressman Walter Jones Jr. earlier this month. Under North Carolina law, there will be a pri mary election for parties to choose their candidates. Candidates must win at least 30 percent of the vote to avoid a primary runoff. A special general election will follow. No decision has been made yet as to when there will be a primary though party insiders have sug gested that it will be in early May. Active in local and state affairs, he had served on the Edenton Town Council, as President of the Edenton-Chowan Chamber of Commerce, Chair man of the Chowan County Board of Elections, trustee for Chowan College, and as a member of the Board of Directors for The Biblical Record er. He was a charter member of the A.J. Fletcher Communications Center of the Baptist State Con vention, had been appointed by Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. to the Edenton Historical Commission, and had served as both Vice-Chairman and Chair man of the Chowan Hospital Board of Trustees. As a member of Edenton Baptist Church, he served as a member of the Deacon Body for 50 years, serving many terms as Chairman. He was Chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee for more than 25 years, Director of the Children’s Sunday School Department for 32 years, Chair man of the Personnel Committee for several years, and had served as Chairman of two Pastor Search Committees. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 65 years, Betty Letcher Manning; and by his brother, James Thomas Man ning. Surviving are two daughters, Nelle Manning Hyatt and husband, The Rev. James Hyatt, Jr., of Franklin, VA, and Anna Kay Manning Laughton and husband, J. Craig Laughton, of Edenton; three grandchildren, James Henry “Buddy” Hyatt, HI (Nikki) of Greenville, Clay Hyatt (Jessica Story) of Franklin, and Carole Laughton Sykes (Scotty) of Edenton; and his first great-grandchild due to be born in March. Friends joined the family for a reception cele brating his life on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in the Fel lowship Flail of Edenton Baptist Church. The pri vate graveside funeral service was held in Beaver Hill Cemetery. LOUISBURG - Elsie Corbitt Currin, 94, of Louis burg transitioned peacefully into eternal rest on Friday, February 22, 2019 at Franklin Oaks Nursing and Rehab. Born on August 3, 1924 to the late Thomas Clif ton and Olivia Mozingo Corbitt. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sisters, Tommy Lou Smith, Elizabeth Roundtree and Nan cy Hand. Elsie graduated from ECU with her master’s de gree; a beloved teacher of thousands of children for 44 years. She lived most of her life in Gates ville and Edenton, NC with a dear fondness for the Chowan River.
