Holmes High School National Honor Society inducted its newest members Monday evening. “I am so proud of the students who were in ducted into the National Honor Society” said Super intendent Rob Jackson. “They have each clearly demonstrated scholarship, leadership, service, and character (the pillars of NHS) as students in our school system. As they signed their name into the rolls of the NHS, they pledged to continue to live out those values. I am con fident that they will do just that and use their gifts to make our community, our state, and our country a better place.” Sheila Evans, White Oak Elementary School princi pal, was the guest speaker. During the formal cere mony that is highlighted by a candle and recitation of the values that the NHS values, juniors received a special pin and seniors a special multi-colored cord that they will wear at grad uation. To qualify for NHS membership, a student must have at least a 3.2 grade point average and be an active member of the community. NHS members are actively involved in stu dent government, athletics, civic groups and volunteer their time for causes such as blood drives and much more. College is the next step for many students, particularly those with high grades and a sense of service. Firm makes case for construction Rick Ott discusses trends with Board of Education BY NICOLE BOWMAN- LAYTON Editor A company familiar with many of Edenton- Chowan Schools’ facili ties offered its services as the system decides the fate of John A. Holmes High School during the recent Board of Educa tion meeting. Former superintendent John Dunn reintroduced the board to Rick Ott, se nior executive, vice presi dent of M.B. Kahn Con struction Company, dur ing the May 14 meeting at Chowan Middle School. Dunn said he and Ott have been friends for al most 40 years, when Khan Construction helped with work con verting the former Chowan High School into the current middle school. Later on, the com pany helped with build ing White Oak and D.F. Walker schools, which are about 20 years old. “It’s just been my Welch named to NC A&T dean’s list SUBMITTED REPORT Kayla BreAnn Welch was named to North Carolina Agriculture and Technical State University’s spring 2019 Dean’s List To receive this aca demic recognition, a stu dent must be enrolled full-time with a minimum of 12 semester hours and have a grade point aver age of 3.25 of higher. Welch is pursuing her Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. She is participating in an internship at Simon sen Law Firm in Eden ton; funded by the Golden Leaf Foundation, from which she received a renewable four-year scholarship and is a cur rent member of their Scholars Leadership Pro gram. Ott said that as a con struction management company, M.B. Kahn could help the board see through all the jargon for a construction project. In April, Camden County hired M.B. Kahn to con duct a feasibility study about constructing a new high school. During his presenta tion, Ott said that schools are moving away from the traditional model, be coming more of a multi purpose space. The theme was “The Living Soil.” Chowan County had 77 sixth-grade stu dents who entered the poster/bookmark con test and eight sixth- graders who entered the Essay Contest. ETHAN NELSON, bDS 482-5131 103 Mark Dr. Edenton, NC (behind Chowan Hospital) hires Sasscer Assistant superintendent’s first day on job June 20 SUBMITTED REPORTS SASSCER The Edenton-Chowan Board of Education has tapped a middle school principal in the Dare County Schools to be the dis trict’s new assistant superin tendent for curriculum and instruc tion. Michael Sasscer, princi pal at Manteo Middle School, will begin his new duties with Edenton- Chowan on June 20, ac cording to a press release. Prior to going to work in Dare County, Sasscer worked in the Currituck County Schools, first as an assistant principal at Cur rituck High School and later as principal at Jarvis- burg Elementary School. He also has worked as an assistant principal at Marvin B. Smith Elemen tary School in the Ala mance-Burlington Schools. A National Board Certi fied Teacher and a former North Carolina Teaching Fellow, Sasscer taught high school math, including ad vanced placement calcu lus, for 10 years before be coming an administrator. He also is a former varsity andjayvee baseball coach. Sasscer earned a doctor ate in education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also holds a master’s de gree in school administra tion and a master of arts in teaching, also from UNC- CH. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in mathe matics and a bachelor of arts in psychology, also from UNC-CH.
