Holmes’ Aaron Pryce had experi enced almost every win ning moment an athlete could have in the sport at the prep level From individual state, regional and conference championships, one of the achievements missing from Pryce’s resume was a team state champi onship. Pryce and the Aces were able to accomplish that feat this spring. His overall impact on the John A. Holmes boys’ track and field team and his success during the sea son made Pryce the selec tion as the Daily Ad vance’s Area Athlete of the Year. Spring all-area teams selected STAFF REPORTS It was another competi tive spring high school sports season. Below are the All-Area players from John A. Holmes for the spring sea son. Baseball Chris Morris, 3B, So.: Albemarle Athletic Con ference Player of the Year, all-conference selection, .288 batting average with 24 RBI, six doubles, three home runs, North Carolina Baseball Pryce, who becomes a two-time Area Athlete of the Year selection, won the Albemarle Athletic Conference champi onship in the boys’ 110- meter hurdles, the 300- meter hurdles, the North Carolina High School Ath letic Association Class 1A East Regional and state championships in the 300- meter hurdles, was a member of the NCHSAA Class 1A East Regional and state championship 4x200 meter relay team along with the 4x100 me ter relay team that won the state championship, but finished second at the East, Regional. Pryce acknowledged that being recognized as the area’s top athlete was a blessing. Ryan White, P/OF, Jr.: Albemarle Athletic Con ference all-conference se lection, eight stolen bases .279 batting average, 12 RBI, five doubles, .996 fielding percentage, posted a 3.32 ERA in 44 1/ 3 innings pitched and posted 54 strikeouts. BY MALCOLM SHIELDS Daily Advance Noah Whitley is admit tedly tough on himself. It’s one of the many at tributes that makes him the type of golfer he has become. As a freshman, Whitley proved that he could play with golfers that had more varsity experience than he had. His performance dur ing the spring made him the selection as the Daily Advance Area Boys’ Golfer of the Year. Whitley built off a good regular season by earning a spot at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 1A Boys’ Golf East Regional tournament at Chocbwinity’s Cypress Landing Golf Club on May 7. During the one-round Caleb Bunch, P/1B, So.: Albemarle Athletic Conference all-conference selection, posted an ERA of 1.57 in 49 innings pitched, registered 65 strikeouts and limited op posing batters to a .189 mark. At the plate, Bunch hit. .250 with five RBI. Chace Kelly, IF/P, Sr.: Albemarle Athletic Con ference all-conference se lection, posted a .321 bat ting average with 18 RBI and four doubles, stole 12 bases, had a .915 fielding percentage, posted a 1.97 regional, Whitley shot an 83 to finish tied for third place. His individual finish earned him a trip to the NCHSAA Class 1A Boys’ Golf state championship tournament at Pinehurst No. 6. The two-round state championship tourna ment was held May 13 and 14. Whitley finished the state championship tour nament tied for 46th place. Being selected as the top golfer in the Daily Ad vance’s coverage area capped Whitley’s fresh man campaign. Whitley noted that there are not many peo ple in the area that are at his grade level that played as well as he did during the spring. See GOLF, B4 ERA in 32 innings pitched and had 39 strikeouts. Softball Jhasi Gilliam, DP/1B, Jr.: Albemarle Athletic Conference all-conference selection, North Carolina Softball Coaches Associa tion District 1 Class 1A all- district selection at first base, .518 batting average, .635 OBP, four home runs with 27 RBI. See TEAMS, B4 Steamers roundup SUBMITTED REPORTS The Edenton Steamers have five players heading to this year’s All-Star game in Savannah, Georgia. The 2019 Afi-Star Show down will be held July 7-8 at historic Grayson Sta dium. LHP Alex Theis, 2B Ian Walters and OF Quincy Hamilton were selected by league votes. OF Alex Alders and LHP Jack Eisenbarger were se lected as a part of the fan vote, which accumulated over 6,000 votes according to the Coastal Plains League. Walters, Hamilton and Alders are tied for the league lead with 6 HR’s this season. Hamilton also leads the CPL with 26 RBI. The 2019 Coastal Plain League All-Star Showdown will be televised nationally to over 30 million house holds, as well as streamed live on MLB.com and the Coastal Plain League’s website. According to a study conducted by the National Athletic Trainers’ Associa tion, more than half of all athletic trainers surveyed (58% to be exact) reported being pressured to make decisions not in the best in terest of the student-ath lete. That’s a challenging spot to put a trainer in. The championship game was played at UNC-Char- lotte’s Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium. Region 1, which is made up of players from north- east North Carolina, was represented by Camden pitcher Hailey Bunting and John A. Holmes infielder Hannah Pippins. - Region 1 was led by Perquimans’ head coach Ricky Stallings and was as sisted by Holmes’ head coach J.P. Pippins and Rosewood’s head coach Shay Campbell. Region 1, which ex pands west to Granville County and south to Lenoir County, finished the tournament with a 4-1 record. The club finished Pool A play with a 1-1 record June 18, but during the single- elimination tournament June 19, Region 1 defeated Region 2 by a 5-3 score then defeated Region 4, the top seed from Pool B, by a 3-0 score to advance to the gold medal game. The Region 1 team se cured gold medals for the second consecutive year. Edenton’s Hannah Pip pins batted first in the Re gion 1 lineup and had the second highest batting av erage on the team of .454 with a .614 OBP and held down second base making multiple plays in the field. Stallings said Hannah Pippins is a leader on any team with lots of passion and fire for the game.
