Chowan Herald CHOWA^HERALD SPORTS B2 WEDNESDAY, July 17, 2019 Chowan University, Vidant help Aces soccer camp Men’s season starts Aug. 19 at Currituck High STAFF REPORT “Spot on, lads!” Coach Chris Whalley’s voice boomed across the held. “Check back, one touch, off you go!” The drill flowed quickly, the ball moving seamlessly, boys sprinting, turning, bellow ing “Left foot, left foot,” and “Turn right,, drop, drop!” The Aces Men’s Soccer Camp was in full swing. Sponsored by Vidant Health Systems, the four- day camp was held last week at Edenton’s Purser Soccer Complex, pre sented by Chowan Univer sity Coach Chris Whalley and his Hawk Soccer Academy. “We are so grateful to Vi dant for their support and to Access Point Church,” Aces coach Thomas DiMartino said. “Coach Whalley and his English and Dutch assistants, all of whom played profession ally in Europe, bring to our players a wealth of techni cal expertise. Currently, the Steamers board of directors is oper ating Hicks Field for owner Frank Burke. The board members, who usually wear teal polo shirts with the words “Steamers board” embroidered on the front, can be seen through out the park during games, operating the concession stands and walking around making sure fans’ needs are met. The members include Billy Bass, president; Bob Turner, vice president; Ted Bass, secretary; Gary Roth, treasurer; and Allan Fredd, at-large members. Other members are Vickie Bar- row, Casey Bass, Tommy Bass, Penny Byrum, Tammy Downum, Matt Evans, Steve Evans, Rachel Johnson, Randy Jordan, George Lewis, Maria Ore, Henry Smith and Becky Wilder. “We started working to gether again on March 1,” General Manager Tyler Russell said in an interview July 10. “The board of V See BOARD, B6 Summer camps underway Fourth & Long Finding sports in summer T his is the time of year when I become des perate for sports. College basketball is long over and now the NBA season is complete as well. Even the excitement of free agency has passed as most of the moves that matter have been made. College football spring practices and games ended about the same time college basketball did and weare still a month and a half SUBMITTED PHOTOS Jasmine Johnson and Trooper competed at the North Carolina State 4-H Horse Show, which was held July 10-14 in at the Governor James B. Hunt Jr. Horse Complex in Raleigh. Johnson is trained by Carla Bundy and is with New Hope Stables Show Team in Hertford. Johnson competed in Junior Hunter Division, which included jumping and flat classes. She also competed in dressage. Johnson’s parents are Rachel and Stephen Johnson of Edenton. The NFL has preseason games beginning in a few weeks but in the mean time, that isn’t an option ei ther. There are snippets of camp highlights (including OBJ launching a football 70 yards) available online, but that isn’t enough con tent to sustain a hefty sports appetite like mine. The World Cup kept me satiated for a little while but it doesn’t last long and it only comes once eveiy four years. I watch some baseball too but, due to the pace of the game, it has pri marily become something that displays on the televi sion while I look at my phone. So what is a guy like me to do? I watch some WNBA of See FRIEDMAN, B6 Fitzgerald honored Steamers Roundup STAFF, SUBMITTED REPORTS HOLLY SPRINGS — The Coastal Plain League announced July 10 that Ian Fitzgerald of Edenton earned Pitcher of the Week honors for week five of the CPL regular season (June 30-July 6). On the mound, Fitzger ald was near un-hittable in his start versus the Peninsula Pilots at home on July 5 to earn the win. The Embry-Riddle sophomore went five scoreless, allowing his first and only hit in the fourth inning of play. His control was on dis play all night as he walked only one and struck out five for a 0.40 WHIP and tossed 52 of 75 pitches for strikes on the night. Before Monday night’s game against Peninsula, Fitzgerald has appeared ♦in nine games with eight starts this season. He has a 1-2 overall record in 30 1/3 innings pitched with 35 strike outs and a 6.82 earned run average. This week’s games On Monday, the Eden ton Steamers were score less against the Peninsula Pilots, 10-0. The Steamers won the past to games with the team from Hampton, Virginia On Tuesday, the Steam ers played the Morehead Marlins at home, but the score was unavailable at press time. As of Monday, the Steamers led the second half of the season in the Coastal Plains League North Division with a 5-2 record. The team was 18- 16 overall, trailing the Wil son Tobs (20-14).
