Chowan Herald CHOWA1HERALD SPORTS WEDNESDAY, July 24, 2019 U10 STATE CHAMPS Edenton All-Stars win tourney Team made of recreation department softball players BY MALCOLM SHIELDS The Daily Advance BARCO — The Edenton All- Stars under 10 girls’ softball team put an exclamation mark to the end of its 2019 Tarheel Leagues season Sunday morning. The Edenton All-Stars defeated the Wilkes County All-Stars 3-0 in the 10U championship final at Currituck Community Park. The Edenton All-Stars ended the state championship tourna ment with a 4-0 record and outscored its opponents 33-1 dur ing the four-day double-elimina tion state tournament. Edenton recorded three shutouts en route to the champi onship. The 10U tournament also held games at Camden Community Park. Winning a state championship will have an impact for Chowan County and the Edenton-Chowan Parks and Recreation department softball program. Edenton All-Stars head coach Mike Pippins noted that the un der 10 team was comprised from a pool of 24 athletes from the Edenton-Chowan Parks and Re- creation softball program. “To be able to get this group of girls from that small amount is big,” Pippins said. Mason Holt hit his first long- ball of the season as he drove in four runs and stole two bases. Quincy Hamilton left the yard with his team-leading ninth homerun. Hamilton had two RBI on the night to bring his season total to 40 which leads the CPL. Marc Ochoa contributed with a 2-for-3 performance while also driving in three runs. LHP Alex Theis struck out the side in the Sth inning. The Clams did not commit an error and moved to 9-7 this sea son when they are perfect in the field. The Steamers have 44 home runs on the year which is good for second best in the CPL. Peninsula 5, Edenton 2: HAMPTON, Virginia — The Steamers lost to the Pilots July 19 at War Memorial Stadium. A Justin Drpich two-run home run to left field gave Edenton (20-18, 7-5 second half) a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Peninsula (21-18, 8-5 second half) responded in the bottom of the inning. With runners on first and third base with one out, Peninsula’s Cole Secrest hit an RBI single to left field to cut the deficit to 2-1. Nick Gonzalez followed with a two-run single to right field to give the Pilots a 3-2 lead. The Steamers were held in check at the plate the remainder of the game as Trey Morgan pitched seven innings, gave up four hits, two earned runs, a walk and struck out seven Eden ton batters to secure the win. Former Aces compete in East-West All-Star game STAFF REPORT GREENSBORO — Two former Aces competed in this year’s North Carolina Coaches Association East- West All-Star Game on July 17. Zakeem Brooks and Kentreaz Coston repre sented John A. Holmes for the East side of the game. The East defeated the West 20-8 at Robert B. Jamieson Stadium in Greensboro as each player saw action. Coston, who started in the game as a defensive back, scored the game’s only touchdown in the sec ond quarter. The former Ace, who’s walking on at Marshall University this year, picked off a pass deep in the West’s zone and took it to the end zone for a 20-yard pick six. Coston’s pick was the only interception of the game for either side as it put the East up 13-8 and give them the lead for good. Coston and his former Edenton teammate Za keem Brooks each recorded a tackle in the game and helped the East defense not allow a first down or an offensive touchdown from the West all game.
