SATURDAY, JULY 27 Sweet Potato Pie concert Sweet Potato Pie, a female band that has been entertaining people for over two decades, will perform from 7-9 p.m. at American Legion Post 40. The band performs a blend of Ameri cana, Country, Gospel and Bluegrass mixed together into a style they call “sweetgrass.” Tickets are $15. Order tickets from any fair board member. MONDAY, JULY 29 Cupola House Speakers Series Peter Rascoe, will speak oh the history of the United States Lifesaving Service in the 19th and 20th centuries at the Shep- ard-Pruden Memorial Library, West Water Street. The United States Life-Saving Service (USLSS) was a United States gov ernment agency that grew out of concerns for saving the lives of shipwrecked sailors and ship’s passengers. Refreshments will be served from 5-5:30 p.m. with the free lecture starting at 5:30 p.m. The series is open to the public. TUESDAY, JULY 30 Blood drive Rocky Hock Baptist Church will host an American Red Cross blood drive from 2-7 p.m. in the church multipurpose room. Visit redcrossblood.org and enter, RHBC , to schedule an ap pointment. All blood types are needed. WEDNESDAY, JULY 31 Reunion deadline The John A. Holmes High School Class of 1972 Reunion Planning Committee announces that July 31 is the deadline for returning registration and payments. Registration packets were sent out by request via U.S. mail, electronic mail, word-of- mouth referrals and text messaging. The class reunion will be held on Sept. 6-7, in Edenton. All alumni and friends from the 1972 graduating class, as well as JAHHS teachers and sup port staff from that period are invited to attend. FRIDAY, AUG. 2 Shrimp by the Bay Join the Edenton-Chowan Chamber of Commerce for an evening of food, fun, music, and mingling at the 18th Annual Shrimp by the Bay from 6:30 to 10 p.m.. Enjoy a meal of fried shrimp, steamed shrimp, fried fish and all the fixings, along with a regular or adult beverage. Live entertainment from Adam Evans and Doug Hodges of ClusterGoat, a silent auction, and a magnificent view of the Chowan River off the pier will be a night to remember. SATURDAY, AUG. 3 Rock Autism The North Carolina Rock Autism Music Festival will be held at the Crawfish Shack, Herford. Gates open at 11 a.m. Pro ceeds from the family-friendly event will benefit the Autism So ciety of North Carolina. Tickets are $15 or $20 at the gate. Holmes High School. There will be free hot dogs and hamburgers, as well as activities for the entire family. People, Not Property An information session about “People, Not Property: Recover ing the History of Slavery in Chowan County,” will be held from 5:306:30 p.m. at Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library. The speaker will be Arwin Smallwood, chair and professor of the Department of History and Political Science at North Carolina A&T University. Learn about this state-wide project on NC history and genealogy that are freely available online through UNC Greensboro’s digital library on American slavery. The free event is open to the public. SATURDAY, SUNDAY, AUG. 10-11 Slumber by the Sound Historic Edenton State Historic Site will host a family camp out in downtown Edenton on the Historic 1767 Chowan County Courthouse Green. Activities include a cookout on the green, s’mores, lawn games, geocaching, and kayaking and canoeing on Edenton Bay. Campsites limited to five people, you can pur chase multiple campsites. SATURDAY, SEPT. 28 Jollification home tour Jollification, a historic home tour of downtown Hertford, will be held from 12:30-5 p.m. The tour is sponsored by the Perquimans County Restoration Association to benefit the Newbold-White House. Tickets for the tour only are $25, while the tour with dinner (at the Newbold-White House) will cost $35. Dinner will be from 5:308 p.m. and will feature a concert by Adam Nixon and the Uphill Band. StoryTime for Toddlers The Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library in downtown Edenton has StoryTime for Toddlers ages 85 at 11 a.m. every Wednesday. Recipients of the Calvin W. Coston Sr. Memorial Scholarship will be ac knowledged and awarded. Guest speaker for the event will be Dr. Bethany Bonner, formerly of Eden ton. Bonner is the daughter of Beverly Twine and Earl Bonner and is a former graduate of John A. Holmes High School. She received her Doc torate of Phar macy degree in 2013 from Howard Univer sity in Washing ton, DC. While at Howard, she held numer ous leadership positions, including president of the National Community Pharmacists Association, from which she received national recognition and a presidential scholarship. She was inducted into the BONNER Kappa Psi Phar maceutical Fra ternity and Phi Lambda Sigma Pharmacy Lead ership Society, with whom she participated in a plethora of com munity service activities. She completed her residency at Xavier University of Louisiana College of Phar macy in New Orleans be fore returning to eastern North carolina to practice.
