According to Russell, Wendle has many fans in northeastern North Carolina, as he married Lindsey Miller, from Eden ton. As of Sunday, Wendle had three at-bats during the postseason, amassing one hit and one run. Dur ing the 2019 regular sea son, he had 238 at-bats, 32 runs with 55 hits and three homeruns. Pitcher Chris Bassitt has been an integral piece of the Oakland Athletics’ starting rotation this year. He played for the Steamers in 2010 and was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 16th Round in 2011. This season, Bassitt amassed a 10-5 record with the Athletics, pitching 144 innings. He currently has a 3.81 ERA for the regular season, 3.84 over his MLB career. Joe Smith was the first Steamers alumnus to make it to MLB. The Houston Astros’ pitcher played in Edenton in 2005. New York Mets drafted him in 2006. While he has played on several teams during his MLB career, Smith has been in the Astro’s bullpen since December of 2017. Smith has pitched 25 in nings for the Astros this season. His career ERA is 2.98, with 1.8 this season. The Steamers’ family is very proud of these play ers, Russell said. “It is awesome to see how successful they have been in their ca reers since their time here in Edenton,” he said. “We will be watch ing all of them closely during the MLB Postsea son this fall.
