Exhibit features Matheson’s photography Talk about photographers preceded reception BY NICOLE BOWMAN- LAYTON Editor Stephen works to Fletcher preserve glimpses of North Carolina’s past through photographs. Part of that past is ex plored in the Chowan Arts Council’s latest ex hibit featuring black and white photography of Hillsborough native Eliz- abeth Matheson. Fletcher, a photographic archivist with the North Carolina collection at Wilson library at UNC- Chapel Hill, spoke about Morten (1903-1984) was a photographer and nature conservationist who developed Grandfa ther Mountain. .Fletcher noted that most of the items ac cepted by the archives are in decent shape. A decision is made whether the subject matter is bet ter served by local insti tutions rather than by UNC. “For a statewide project, we’ll take a look at it and see if there’s a local historical agency. If the photographs are strictly negatives, they require strict tempera ture and humidity con trols.” During his talk for the CD Release Party PHOTOS BY MILES LAYTON/CHOWAN HERALD PHOTO COURTESY KIP SHAW Paul Richmond and Peter Boehling of Old Fish Hatchery Records harmonize during the Music and Water Festival. CAC, Fletcher centered the work of Matheson ' , and other North Carolina discussion around the female photographers before the exhibit’s open ing reception Thursday. What makes Matheson’s work special is that she traveled around the state, photographing architec ture and landscapes. After his talk, Fletcher discussed how UNC ar chives decides to add to its collection with Chowan Herald Staff Writer Miles Layton. “We’re looking for col lections of work by pho tographers who have a certain project that they’ve done or long standing career of note,” he said. “That’s why we have the negative archive of Hugh Morten. We have the negative archive from the Durham Herald-Sun.” theme, “Wootten: Pen land: Matheson: Eden ton.” Mary Bayard Mor gan Wootten (1875-1959) livedin New Bern and gave her neighbor Caleb Bradham the name and logo for his creation, Pepsi Cola. She was the first woman to make a photograph from an air plane in 1914 and is known for her photo graphs of North Carolina, including Penland, in Mitchell County. Matheson put Edenton in the spotlight through her black and white pho tographs used in the book “Edenton: A Por traitin Words and Pic tures.” The book is avail able at the CAC and the Barker House.
