NICOLE BOWMAN-LAYTON/CHOWAN HERALD County repairs water line leak 50,000 gallons lost in Arrowhead Beach BY MILES LAYTON Staff writer Chowan County Water Depart ment hustled Monday to repair a water line leak within the Arrow head Beach community. More than 710 water customers were affected when a leak was re ported between Bandon and Blackfoot roads. Nearly 50,000 gallons of water was lost before the leak was re paired Monday. A boil advisory was sent out via the county’s hyper-reach phone system for the customers which were potentially impacted for loss of pressure. The hyper-reach call was initiated at approximately 12:48 p.m. Monday. “Water quality testing has been performed. Our protocol is to leave the advisory in effect for 24 hours out of an abundance of cau tion,” said Susanne Stallings, county spokeswoman. Colleen Nicholas, president of the Arrowhead Beach Property Owners Association, offered praise to the county’s water de partment. “The Arrowhead Beach property owners thank the Chowan County Water System for their quick re sponse and repair of the broken water main,” she said. ZONES Continued from Al input.” Council hired a planning consultant to help navigate through the process be cause the goal was to save the distressed neighbor hoods in the core of the town. State statues provide urban redevelopment laws MILES LAYTON /CHOWAN HERALD Down East Preservation's crew took a moment to strike a pose for posterity while they are repairing and restoring this old home on West Gale Street. The property is within one of Edenton's neighborhood redevelopment zones. within redevelopment zones. Two agenda items from Monday’s Town Council meeting pertain to acquisitions that would not have been possible with out the redevelopment zones. “People wanted this — they wanted people living in their neighborhoods, not blighted houses,” Council man Sambo Dixon said during Monday’s council meeting that included dis cussion about the town’s redevelopment zones. More on this council meet ing will appear in next week’s edition. The covenants Council has been working on are key foundations to the re development effort, Knighton said. Dawson Tyler, of Down East Preservation, has been spearheading an ef fort to repair old homes throughout Edenton. Tyler and his crew go into an old home and give it a makeover from the floorboards to the attic. Houses that were once va cant get a new lease on life as they transition to homes for families seeking to move in Edenton’s historic neighborhoods. “The mayor and council tip their caps to Dawson for the great community redevelopment work he is doing,” Knighton said. “There’s going to be oppor tunities for others to get in volved in redevelopment as well.” Recently, Tyler led the Chowan Herald on a tour through 207 West Gale St., a two-story home with a sizeable back yard that is a hop skip and and a jump away from St Paul’s Epis copal Church. The house screams eastern NC am biance with its front porch, kitchen in the back, bed- rooms upstairs and metal roof. “I frequently compare what I do to adult sand cas tles,” Tyler said. “It really satisfies an artistic urge to return something that was once beautiful back to that state.” Once upon a time, these white, wooden houses were as common as to bacco fields throughout the farm belt. Nowadays, nostalgia seekers have Down East Preservation to thank for restoring these homes within the town’s redevelopment zones. When Tyler is done, the house on West Gale Street will be a modern home with all the conveniences. “What we at Down East Preservation and other pri vate investors are doing is saving this little town’s his tory and expanding the playing field for families that want to experience the vibrancy of down- town,” Tyler said.
