Piles receives Quilt of Valor Arrowhead Beach resident honored for military service BY STAFF REPORT Andree .Piles, of Arrow head Beach, recently re ceived a Quilt of Valor for his service in the United States Navy. 1116 quilt was presented Dec. 1 at his home. It was piece and bound by Mau reen Durant and quilted by Judy Patrick, both of Grateful Threads of Elizabeth City. Piles entered the service in January 1988. He served on the USS Barbour County LST-1195, USS McKee AS- 41 and TWR-3, and was sta tions at Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity in San Diego, California. In 1998, he transferred to Norfolk, Virginia, and served on the USS Klakring FFG-42 and US Kauffman FFG-59. From December 2001 until his dis charge in June 2003, Price served at Shore Intermediate Maintenance Activity, Nor folk, while rising to the rank ofE-5/EN2. During his time in the service, he was award ed the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Expedition ary Medal, four Sea Ser vice Deployment ribbons, two Good conduct medals, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait), two National De fense Service Medals, three Southwest Asia Service Medals, Navy Unity Com mendation Medal, plus nu merous other awards and achievements. In 2001, Piles moved to Edenton after marrying Vicky Aylesworth. Andree has a daughter Tiffany, and Vicky had a daughter, Marilyn and son, Alan. Catherine Roberts came up with the idea for Quilts of Valor in 2003. America. Since then over 228,000 Quilts of Valor have been awarded in the United States, Germany, Iraq and Af ghanistan. The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing quilts. The foundation describes the quilt layers in this way: ■ The top of the quilt with its many colors, shapes and fabric represents the commu nities and the many individu als we are. ■ The batting, the filler, is the center of the quilt. It rep resents our hop that this quilt will bring warmth, comfort, peace and healing to the indi vidual who received it. ■ The back is the strength that supports the layers. It represents the strength of the recipient, the support of his or her family, our communi ties and our nation. ■ Each stitch that holds the layers together represents love, gratitude and some times tears of the maker. Queen St.: This 20th century home (circa 1919) described as “an impressively scaled residence” and a “most dis tinctive Bungalow style” has magnificent porches that are famous for large, and small, gatherings hosted by the owner, Mr. Bill Shultz. ■ 118 W. Queen St.: A 20th century bungalow by builder Frank Fred Muth is now the 21st century home of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Jones. As this is their first year in Edenton, this is the first time the owners’ collection of quilts can be viewed. ■ 209 W. Queen St.: Another 19th century home (1889), with a 20th centu ry Colonial revival porch added about 1905, is gra ciously shared with the Tour by Mr. and Mrs. Gary Foreman. All the garlands and arrangements with the fresh greenery and flowers are made by Mrs. Foreman, a member of the Garden of Eden Club. Belvidere-Ryland Church of Christ Belvidere-Ryland Church of Christ, of 307 Ryland Rd, Tyner, will have a candlelight service that starts at 5 p.m. Dec. 22.
