C We have at last, after many yean of toil and Ktruggte, border the State with lines of travel and transportation, so that from Cur rituck to Cherokee, there is swift and o - easy communication. i.ou are no longrr wedged in between Georgia and Tennessee; but from your ex treme border you nave a graand highway to AiiheviMe and to Raleigh. I trutit and believe, that the com pletion of this ' road may prove of the very highest .good to the whole State, and may bind the more close ly together the best cople in the world, the people of North Carolina. I hope you and yours are well and doing well.' I would like to hear from you sometime as to how you aie getting along, and how the coun try prospers and our friends are. Your friend, J. C. McRak. Mehsbr. R. L. Hkrbert and oth ers, Committee on Invitation, Mur phy, N. C. . Gentr.l received this morning your invitation to meet wtfh the citi zens of Murphy, and Cherokee coun ty "North Carolina on the 23rd in st., t participate in celebrating the com pletion of the Western North Caro lina Railroad to Murphy. A busi ness engagement to meet parties here oiv that day, which I cannot now alter, 'prevents' my acceptance of your invitation. ' ' k. In behalf of the Chamber of Com merce of the City, I congratulate Murphy, and the strong arms and stout hearts of those who have fought "the world the flesh and the devil" for her realization of this step in the future. ''' ' ' " "Go West .and grow up with the countrv" is rapidly beaming. Go mf aV w South and grow up with the country." "East and West lines" are bo longer the only paying lines. I- cannot adequately express the deep regret I feel, that many circumstances beyond my con trol, will prevent -aceepting your in- fi.ood ;om- Caro- lina Railread; but though cbmpelled to be absent, 1 will, in spirit, unite with thera in their rejoicings pi this great enterprise which for nearly a-half century theyv have been ear nestly looking and laboring, for with alternate hope and .disappointment; and I do this, the more cordially, be cause it was my 'good fortune iji the past to make this one of the.spccial objects of my legislative labors. -; : Most hastily do I-congratulate you and, them outthis happy occasion, and roost sincerely do I , believe it to be the beginning of a new epoch iu the history of your County. t y Blessed as your, section is. with so . ' - - . . . : ' ... ' - majiy natural advantages, ana .en iriihe! by such a variety of mineral, and other wealth, there is eveiy rea son to hope that the completion of this Railroad, which brings your people in closer and more intimate commercial and social . relations with the State, and-business sections or the country, will be the mean. of making it one ot the desirable, both for homes and .bu.iuess investments in'our ra,iidlv growing South laud.1 We people, therefore, have much cause for rejoicing over this most au spicious event. ' j ' .- - . But I ican not) I rid. mysfelf --of t h o ought and I 'trust I may be par doned for alluding to it that in the 'great joy of the day there will be, I know, sincere and heartfelt regret, that he, who was the chief projector of this great enterprise at the time apparently impracticable of build ing a railroad through the mountains of Western North Carolina, and who with such ; persistent teal, continued his efforts in behalf of his section and people in the face of discouragements that would cause the stoutest hearts to quail that's he, though living, is prevented by his had affliction from joining with his beloved people in celebrating the commemoration of his life-work. I need not say that I refer to Col. William II. Thomas nor Bhould proper tribute be with held from others who were his co laborer's and succeswfr's iu this great work. The lamented Hayes, of your own County, Bryson, of Swain and Robinson, of Macon, and others, all of whom so earnestly labor in behaff of this Railroad. It is befitting, that the celebration of the laying of the Corner Stone of the magnificent court house, which you are to erect in Murphy, should be the crowning act of this memora ble occasion; For while the one be tokens the administration of justice in the courts of the County, the oth er evidences the realization of that justice to which the Western people have been so many years entitled, and for which they have so particu larly waited. v Again assuring you and the people of my inexpressible regret at not being able to be present and partici pate with them in their rejoicings, and renewing my warmest congratu lations on the completion . of the Western North Carolina Railroad. We clip' the following from the Constitution of 29th: Will the Marrietta and North Georgia railroad be bottled up this side of Knoxviile? It js rumored in railroad circles that matters between that road and the East Tennessee are not satisfact ory, and unless sornething is done the road will not be permitted to cross the Tennessee river. At present" the road goes into Knoxviile over the Marysville branch of the East Tennessee. If the con sent of the East Tennessee is with drawn, there will be nothing left for the Mafrietta and North Georgia rail road to do but to build its own "bridge across the Tennessee or stay out of Knoxviile. The road being in the bands of a receiver in.no way conld ' the necessary-bridge and track be built except by issuing receiver's certificates. " A call was made yesteryty on Judge Henry B. Tompkius, ascertain the truth of the rumor, bat it1 was found that he was out of the city, having gone to Knoxviile. Judge Tompkins represents the bondholders, and it is presumed that he U now in Knoxviile for the - pur pose of seeing if existing differences cannot be, adjusted. . ' To the Cituenj of IXurphy.
