(Special) A hearing to determine the owner ship of mineral liphts on 2,300 acres ?>f land, one-hali of which has been deeded to the North Carolina 'ark commission for the Great Smoky Mountain National park, was opened, Thursday, April 28th before I>on Witherspoon, commissions ap pointed to hear the case. Three litigants, Miss Stella McCoy, the Stikeleather interests including J. (?. Stikeleather, of Ashevillc, and others, and the Silcr Meadows Min .ng company, are claiming owniV >h.p to the mineral rights, in the action. A Hall Johnson, of Ashevillc, re presents the North Carolina Park Commi>sion as counsel. Tho Stikeleather interests are re pasentcd by Alvin Kartus, Asheville attorney, J. Scroop Styles also of Asheville, and B. C. Jones of Bryson City, represent Miss McCoy. S. W. Black of BVyson City and Sam Moore of Sylva are counsel for the Silor Meauows Mining Company. ? South African Mission ary Is Murphy Visitor The Rev. P. du Toit, B. A., of '-^toria, South Africa, general sec retary for national missions of the ^ntch Reformed Church in South Africa, and Mrs. dui Toit, were visi tors at the Regal hotel this week. -Mr. and MVs. du Toit are visiting **>ools in Americga, observing meth and getting information that may *>e useful in their work at home. Reports showed that the organ iza tino has gained in membership tim ing the past 12 months. At noon Thursday the delegates, which num bered between 1500and 2000, en joyed a picnic dinner. I , was observed by the Woman's auxiliary of Murphy with a birthday pa try .it the home of Mrs. R. W. Gray. Ten year* ago last May, the idea of celebrating th- birthday of the aux iliary was introduced, and from that day until the r'resent time, the great 1 Auxiliary family has united in a cele bration. It was the the original plan, con ceived by iMVs. Hallie P. Winsbor oueh. Secretary Kmoritua ot Woman's work, that all local auxiliaries of the Prtsbyterian chtfrch U. S. would unite in a birthday offering for one definite cause each year, this object to lie decided upon by the Woman's Advisory Committee. The object would be one in which the women and girls of the Hor.i ? lan 1 and the I* oreign fields would be the recipients shdarir.g alternately in the gifts. Program Rendered An intersting program was ren dered. A playlet, "The School's \ cry Best," by Frances Rolston, Showing the value of the training re ceived in the schools, was presented. The scene was laid in a mountain homo in 1042. The characters were Grandma, Mrs. R. H. Hyatt; Sarah her daughter. Mrs. J. N" Hill; Hettie, Sarah's daughter, student of Stuart Robinson, MVs A. C. Huber; Mary Ann, Hettie's daughter, Mary Fran ces Bell. A contest, "A Mountain Wedding in Kentucky," by Jennie Lee Craft on. caused much merriment. Following the program, the host ess, assisted by Mrs. M. W. Bell, serv ed a salad, punch and individual birthday cakes, each bearing a tiny green candle in pink rose holder. A substantial offering was made. Those present were Mi's. M. W. Bell, Miss Mary Frances Bell. Mrs. J. H. Dillard, Mrs. Mary Daly, "Mrs. R. W. Gray, Mt-s. J. N. Hill, Mrs. A. C. Huber, Mrs. R. H. Dickey, prominent Murphy citizen, is seeking the nomination on th? Republican ticket for Repre sentative from Cherokee County. Mr. Dickey served in the Senate from the 39th District at one time, and is well qualified for the place he seeks. He was a member <f the county board of education at one time, is a Mason and a member oi the Baptist church, having served in .in official capacity of both lodge and church. Mr. Dickey Ptate* in his announce ment that he wants to represent Cherokee County, and wil), if nom inated and elected,4 eerve the peorte to the best of his ability. WISDOM BEGINS WITH MOTHER LAST RITES HELD WILEY S. GREEN, MURPHY CITIZEN Funeral service for Wiley S. Green prominent Murphy citizen, was hold Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Mcthodi.-t church, the pastor, the Rev. T. F. Higgins, officiating, as sisted by the Rev. C. K. Turner, pas to'r of the Baptist church. . Death followed a stroke of paralysis. Had Mr. Gren lived until August he would have? been 77 years old. He was born and reared in Gainsville, Ga., coming to Muriphy about 40 years ago. lit was a member of the Methodist church and a -Mason, having been secretary and treasurer of the Murphy lodge : for many years. He was buried in Sunset cemetery with full Maconic ' honors. Surviving are his wife and the following children: Mrs. Frank Tate' of Ducktown, Tenn., H. K. Green, of Struthcrs, Ohio.. Fred Green of New ; York; Wallace, Bob and John of Murphy, and four grandchildren. Health Conference Cullowhee Saturday I ; A health conference put on joint ly by the State Department of Edu cation, the State Health Department j and 'Western Carolina Teachers Col- j lege, will he held Saturday, May 7th, ! at Cullowhee. for the eight western counties of North Carolina, accord ing to infohnation received this week ' from President H. T. Hunter , of , Carolina Teachers College. The con- ' ference will be held at the college. A number of prominent health j authorities will appear on the pro gram. including Dr. L. B. McBrayer. Sanatorium. X. C. ; Dr. Ernest Branch of the State Department of Heauth; Miss Juanita McDougald, Raleigh: Miss Pe arl Weaver. Weaverville, and : several other members of the eo3- j lege faculty. The conference will be attended by physicians, nurses school officials, and persons interested in the health of school children throughout the eight western coir.itiefe. Frank Bristol was call ed to Topton Wednesday night to take charge of a man who does not know his name nor where he is from. The sheriff didn't know what to do, oth er than to bring the man to Murphy and place him in jail for safe keep ing un?il sdme of his relatives could he found. No charge was lodged . against him. The man is about 25 to .SO years t years old, weighs about 145 pounds, is 5 feet 7 or S inches tall, has dark i brown hair and blue eyes, lie is | wearing a cap and blue pants, no j coat; coarse black shoes. TOPTON Services were closed Wednesday night in the Methodist church, where the Revs. Wilkerson and Carper were holding a revival. Mr. and Mrs. Will Taylor tpent Sunday afternoon in Murphy. Mr. and (Mrs. E. B. King visited relatives in Robbinsville Sunday Mr. Jep Tatham 'returned home with them to attend to business for Mr. King. The living room was dec orated with standing vases of bloom ing service thi ee. The vows were spok en under a bay window arch before the Rev. Shotwell Esk ridge, of Ash ville. The bride wore a dark blue travel ing ensemble with cossage of wild violets *and arb uJ.uk. Following a dinner for the wedding guests the couple left by motor for a honey moon. Mrs. .lone? is well known for her musical attainments. She is organ ist and choir director at Trinty Espi copal chu'rch. Mr. Jones, formerly of Philadelphia, has made his home I in Asheville for the post 10 years j and is also well known in musical circles. I Mr. and Mrs. Jones will reside on ; the Pisgah mountain highway near . Canton where Miss Jones is engaged | in farming. An effort was made t.?*o years apo to make this change but a protest was made a ! painst the act. Our citizens felt | that the action was an unfair one i then, and haven't changed their minds J yet, it seems. Messrs. J. >1. and W. H. Garren I visited relatives at Ellijay, Ga. last 1 week.
