R. Thompson Th.re is no question about the crowing of snapsMeans being on of best car- cr< ?s f ?r th*. mounta.ii section of Noith Caroina due to the fact that there is either burned up or ??ut of -ea-on at tht time our crop is ready to harvest. An akundancv of ir >h . nder beans can be sold in v.ir: us sections of th South. Tht. are many who would clow bean a- a cash crop if it wei not for :he beete. Howv ?. by f Howi..;. th. instructions given herein, the cetle need not be ; justifiab r as< 1 f r not growing beans. What is needed is the nee. ssaiy information of :o\v to spray, what to spray w th and when to <1 ray. The size of the plant has nothing to d with the proper time to spray. T.u- ean be tie first comes in foi in of a hard shell beetle wx.i.h seldom causes enough damage to icquire spraying th. brans but lays elation of larvae. These are chewing arva and work on th under idc of the leaves, destroying the leaf and sapping the vitality from t-h.- plant. If the larvae are allowed to continue to eat from the fiints the plant will soon dry up and die. The time to spray for beetles s when the eggs begn to hatch. It takes the eggs from live to ten days to hatch and if sprayed during this period i: will c >mpletely destroy one generation of beetle-. The next spraying will be necssary on these same b an? when they are in bloom and his should be sufficent to control the beetle if the work of spraying is thoroughly done. The beans should be watched for the beetles so as to catch them at the proper time. The most effective control of the Mexican bean etle is a preparation of magnesium arsenate at the rat of to 2 lbs. per 50 gallons of water with 1 tablespoon full of washing powedr to the gallon. If it is desirable to mix in small r quantities use 2 oz. or 10 level tablespoon fulls oi magnesium arsenate to 3 gall >ns of water with the washing powder added. Another effective control is Barirm Fluosilicate (Dutox): 1 to 1 1-2 lbs. to 50 gallons of water or 1 t i j-? iu o gaji-Jfis ox water. Thc-.-e solutions applied thoroughy at the proper time or as describd above to the tinder side of the tavts is a sure guarantee of a bean rop as far as the benn beetle is rone rned. Remember to thoroughy mix the solution and strain h rough two thicknesses of cheese loth before filling the mixture into he tank. A 3 to 4 gallon air pressure spray machine is sufficient for small acreages. IiuMting Kvith Magnesium Arsenit , Derris Powder, or Barium Fluoilicate (Dutox) is also effective tut great, care should be used to g?t i? I HEN IN MURPHY :i: $ SURE TO EAT AT I I ?the?
