^ Thursday, June 10, 19; j SOCII 1; Mrs. J. B. Ward. Stillwell-Allen CULLOWHEE, June 8.?The mar riage of Miss Miriam Stillwell, ol Cullowhee. daughter of Professor and Mrs. E. H. Stillwell, and Leonard Allen of Sylva, son of Mrs. Lloyd Allen, was solemnized this afternoon at the Cullowhee Baptist church, the Rev. P. L. Elliott officiating. The church was decorated with mountain laurel, leucothoes, and hemlock, and about a laurel covered arch irtood tall baskets of laurel. After the playing of "Liebestraum" by Miss Kate Stillwell, sister of the bride, Miss Rachel Coward of Cullowhee sang "At Dawning" and Dan Cook of Webster sang "The Sweetest Story Ever Told." The wedding March from "Lohengrin" was played as a recessional, and during the ceremony "To A Wild Rose' by McDowell was played. The bride, who entered with her father, by whoun she was given in marriage, wore a crepe and lace dress of the color of ashes of roses with white accessories. Her shoulder corsage was white gardenias. The ushers were James Edwin Brown and Ben Battle of Cullowhee. An informal reception was held immediately following the ceremony at the bride's home for a limited number of relatives and friends. Following the reception, the couple left for White Lake and various points on the North Carolina coast. The bride is a graduate of George Pea body college and a teacher in che Murphy city schools; the groom is a graduate of the Sylva Collegiate institute and ioint-nronrieto** of .Sylva Radio shop. M rs. Long is Quest At Andrews The Evening Circle of the Andrews Presbyterian church met at the home of Mrs. Edwin Bristol on Monday night at seven o'clock. Mrs. Stewart H. Long of Murphy was invited to represent the Evening Circle of the Murphy Presbyterian church. She was accompanied by Mrs. John Hanks. Mrs. Bristol, who is chairman of the circle presided at the meeting, and after conducting the business session, the meeting was placed in charge of Mrs. L. B. Nichols who opened the program with a short devotional. Mrs. Nichols then gave art interesting dis'cnssion of "Birthday Gifts In The Homeland from 1923 until 1933." i At the conclusion of the program Mrs. ! Hyatt Bible Class Has Annual Party The ladies of the Methodist church who compose the Hyatt Bible class held their annual party at the home of Mrs. G. VV. Ellis on Friday night. Mrs. J. H. McCall acting as joint hostess. The living ramm of the Ellis home was unusually colorful with its arrangement of pink rosebuds and additional vari-colored cut flowers, which were artistically blended. The social hour was opened by Mrs. R. C. Mattox who read the scriptural passage after which a general discussion of "church re-decoration" followed. During the social hour the hostesses served lemonade and cookies to the following: Mesdames, Laura McElfresh, Luther Axley, Hayes Leatherwood, Mcllicent Miller, G. W. Candler, W. B. Ferguson and R. C. Mattox. Mass Lahn Entertains Miss Dorothy Lahn entertained a group of her friends at an informal dancing party on last Thursday evening. The Lahn home was attractively decorated with bowls of cut garden flowers. The hostess served punch and crackers throughout the evening. Those attending were: Misses Kate Padgett, Willie Hinton, Midi red Brumby, Louise Christopher, Mar> Alice and Virginia Slaughter, Mary Willard Cooper and Mary Cathron Hensley. Messrs. Jack Christopher, Jack Barnett, J. L. Abernathy, Dan Wheeler, Charles Hyatt, Harry Carringer, Dick Mauney and Hadiey Williamson. Morgan j The wives of the men who are emI ployed by the TVA in Murphy and the ^ surrounding area entertained Mrs. A. i t E. Morgan, wife of Dr. A. E. Morgan, Chairman of the Board of Directors of T. V. A., at a luncheon on Friday, j June 4, at the Henry House. The i guests, as they entered, were greet- i ed by Mrs. L. G. Phifer, who directed them to the register which was presid- I ed over by Mrs. Albert Stanford and Mrs. Howard Hayes. Mrs. W. B. Richardson, was was the general chairman of the luncheon, then led the guests into the dining room where a pink and blue motif was effectively carried out. Each table was centered with a bowl of pink and blue larkspur flanked on either side by tall pink tapers in crystal holders. Trailing vines of ivy were artistically arranged on each side of the centerpiece, and each place was marked by a nosegay of sweetpeas. Following the three couse luncheon, Mrs. T. T. Lindsey introduced Mrs. Morgan who spoke to the T. V. A. ladies on the subject, "How The T. V. A. Wives May Be Helpful." She emphasized the fact that the general social trend sedated to be reverting back to a love for the simple things of life, that is. simplicity in home life, in living habits, entertainment, and so on. And citing several passages taken from Veblen's book, "The Theory of the Leisure Class," she clearly illustrated her meaning. Mrs. Morgan, who herself has a home in Norris, spoke of the convenient homes that the women may have at Hiwassee Divm, and how easily they may become adapted and fullv eniov livimr o le yet happy life. And by so doing, each wife might fulfill her task of being a truly helpful wife. Mrs. Morgan also expressed her pleasure at being able to meet with the TV A women of this region and hoped to be here again in the near future. Other guests ?f honor were Mrs. C. E. Blee, Mrs. 0. 'herokee Scout, Murphy, N IESH MUs Ha ' Mrs. Lawrence Calls Meeting Mrs. Dunn Lawrence called a meeting of the prospective members of the ! Bridge club on Monday afternoon at the Library to discuss plans for the future meetings, officers, hostesses, and so on. The suggestion was made to employ an instructor who will teach the various members and anyone wishing to belong the necessary rules and plays of the game. This will be decided upon at a later date. It was also emphasized that anyone , wishing to belong to the club may do I so. The next meeting will be at the J Library on next Monday, June 14, at two o'clock. Bryan Group Visits Murphy s Eleven Bryan students and faculty imembers journeyed to Murphy, * N. Mrs. Bryson is a former resi- J dent of Dayton, then known as Mrs. ' P. M. Burkett. Mrs. Dale Lee and Mrs. Jimmie Ward wil entertain jointly at the home of their mother, Mrs. G. W. Candler, with a tea on Thursday afternoon, June 10, from 4 until 6 o'clock, honoring Mrs. Edward Madden, a recent bride. The Charity League will sponsor a dance at the gymnasium on Friday night, June 11th, at 9 o'clock. Jimmie Cinicolo and his orchestra, of Gainesville, Ga., will furnish the music. D. Mayfield left Saturday morning for Raleigh where he will attend the graduation of his two sons, lien and Frank, from State College there. ***** Miss Mildred Akin, who has been attending Summer School at Cullowhee, has gone to Wrightsville Beach, near Wilmington, N. C., for a week's vacation before returning to her home here. She accompanied a party from Franklin. ***** Mrs. Hugilbert Abernathy of Livingston, Tenn., and Mrs. Frank Fain of Murphy spent Thurcday in Asheville. * * ? . Miss AHine Richardson, Miss Mary YVilkio Petrie, Mrs. John Hollifield and Mrs. R. W. Petrie spent Monday in Atlanta. . Mrs. 0. E. Madden, who has been visiting friends and relatives in Louisiana for soma time returned to her home hare Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Madden met her in Chattanooga and the three of them returned to Murphy Sunday night. ***** Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bishop, Mr. and Mrs Dale Lee and Mrs. J. W. Thompson attended the funeral of Mr. Truman Whitfield at Jasper, Ga. Sunday afternoon. Mr. Whitfield was a brother-in-law of Mrs. O. W. Hendricks, who formerly lived here. \
