It is de.si-ineti to raise $3,593,900,000. It plans to iai.se this total partly by iv.iehlri down into income levels which ha\e neve, been subjected to direct Federal taxation before. Finally, though the little fellow is hard hit, the big boys are given an even harder wallop. Present corpor ation taxes will be retained, and in ! addition surtaxes of six per cent will i be added on the first $25,000 net income and seven per cent on income above that amount. The first $20,000 of excess profits will be subjected to a tax of 35 per cent instead of the old 25. and the rate will go up until it reaches 60 per cent on excess profits over 5500. 000. Present rate on that level is only 50 per cent. Heavy as this tax bill is. few be lieve it will prove adequate. Soon our spending, for arms alone, will reach $3. 000. 000. 000 a month ? near ly as much as the new measure is de signed to raise in an entire year. Many an authority is convinccd that next year, the Congress may j have to pass another tax bill which I will make this one seem mild by l comparison. So quit your kicking. Mister ? ' you ain't seen nothin' yet!"' o Here Comes Winter Old man winter is on his way. Months of rain and snow are not far off and with winter come hazards. Hazard number one is your heat ing plant. Before long. It will be sub jected to maxiumum load. Any defect any weakness, may result in a disas trous fire. That is true of furnaces, stoves, fireplaces and everything which has to do with creating and conveying heat. Don't be your own inspector. It is not an amateur's jab. Call in a qauli fied repairman. It won't cost much? and it may save a life, or a home. Another hazard is exposed electric wiring. Cords fray, and fixtures get out of whack:. Short days involve heavy use of light.
