Tips On Saving Coal1
Given Householders
By Federal Expert \
Home owners can effect substan
tial savings in fuel costs by following
a few simple rules In the operation
of coal burning furnaces, says Miss
Harriet Elliott, head of the O. P. M.
consumer division.
Householders are declared to be
notoricwfe coal-wasters. Wastage
amounts in extreme cases to one ton I
out of every three.
For instance, many misguided
shove lers cover tlieir burning coal
s=^=td7 addin* now fuel.
They shouldn't. Coal should be added 1
this way :
1. Set dampers so that coal U
burning turtghUy.
2. Add now fuel in one section of
the flrebed.
3. Leave a "bright spot" of glow
ing coals exposed oo the surtbee to
ignite cases given off by the new

If the firebox isn't big enough to
add sufficient ooal in this manner,
burning ooal may be piled up on the
sides of the firebox and new ooal
added in the oriater. Tbke care to
disturb the flrebed as little as possi
ble.
