Certificates Of
War Necessity
Certificates of war necessity
will be required on and after
November 15 for the operation of
all < rucks and other commercial
motor vehicles, regardless of
whether they are operated on the
highways and regardless of
whether State licenses have been
issued for them.
Tliis was made plain by Robert
O. Carter. District Manager of the
Office of Defense Transportation
At the same time he issued a new
appeal to operators of all trucks
and other commercial motor ve
hicles to file their applications
for certificates Immediately.
Mr Carter stressed the point
that operators who wait until the
last minute to file their applica
tions cannot cxoect rccwvc
their certificate! by the deadline.
Without a certificate, an operator
cannot buy gasoline, tires and
parts.
Applications were mailed some
time ago to owners of trucks and
other commercial moior vehicles
registered as of December 31.
1941. but no blanks were sent to
owners of farm and industrial
trucks which were not used on
the highways and were thus un
registered.
Owners of such vehicles should
contact the Ashevilie office of
CDT immediately, where arrange
ments will be made for them to
file Uoiia with the Detroit
office of ODT
Commercial vehicles, as defined
by the ODT. means trucks, buses
ft n d taxicabs, regardless of
whether they are privately own
ed. Accordingly, a farmer must
have a certificate for a truck
even though the vehicle is used
enly on his own farm.
Junior Red Cross
Enrollment Starts
Here This Week
The American Junior Red
C:oss enrollment, for service will
take place November 1-15, Mrs.
H. Bueck, Chairman of the Junior
Red Cross Chapter of Cherokee
county, has announced. The ef
fort will be made to enroll the en
tire student group of the Murphy
schools. In the 25 years of its
existence the Junior Red Cross
has been a worthwhile construc
tive organteation, not only for the
service that it has rendered but
for the broadening extent of its
worldwide activities and friend
ships. says the chairman. Last
year 1100 school children of Mur
phy belonged.
Next week if your child asks
for a penny or a nickle for the
Junior Red Cross, you will know
that he will be joining a group of
more than 14,000,000 youngsters
who are not only trying to do
their part in winning the war.
but doing their share toward a
better after war world.
Last year the Junior Red Cross
at Murphy contributed a large
share in the collection of Victory
Books for the boys at camp. In
the recent scrap campaign, they
had a special campaign of their
own in the collection of old keys.
IRON IN THE BLOOD. FIRE IN
THE SOUL
In these perilous days when the
nation's freedom and security is
threatened, the indifferent or
complacent citizen is a mildly dis
loyal one. If he isn't for us he
may properly be classed against
us. There is hardly a middle
ground.
The line of demarcation is clear
and there isn't a "no man's land"
between loyalty and its lack. That
person who isn't putting his best
effort with heart and soul into
some sort of service for his coun
try is indirectly though unwit
tingly and unconsciously helping
the enemy. If we win the war it
will be without complacency and
indifference.
It is going to take iron in the
blood and fire in the soul to do
the Job. ? West Asheville News.
