Warm sunshine brought large
crowds of Murphy people out to
EasU r services Sunday, and many
new spring costumes and bright
corsages were noted.
The highlight of the day was
the cantata. "The Resurrection
Sonj{ by Roy E. Nolte. present
ed by t; :e Methodist choir under
the direction of Miss Virginia
Anne Morgan, at 7:30 p. m. The
Baptist congregation gave up its
evening service and united with
tiie Methodists to hear the pres
entation. which showed hard work
and good training. The large
auditorium was filled with appre
ciative listeners.
The tableau of "The Women
at the Tomb", presented at the
assembly period of the adult de
partment of the Baptist Sunday
school at 9:45 under direction
of the chairman of the depart
ment, Mrs H. Bueck. was impres
sive and well received by a large
audience of Baptists and visitors
from other churohes.
The Rev. A. B. Cash used as his
subject Sunday morning. "Now is
Christ Risen," with special Easter
music by the choir.
The Rev. Ralph Taylor preach
ed on "The Immortal Christ"
Sunday morning. Two children
were received into the church,
and at the close of the service,
Mr and Mrs. H. A. Mattox
brought their young son, who was
Christened Philip Roscoe Mat
tox.
At 3 o'clock, Mr. Taylor preach
ed an Ester sermon at Ranger
chapel and held the second quar
terly conference for the churches
of P anger. Rogers, Reids, Culber
son. Unaka, and Bellview, for the
Rev W T Medlin, Jr.. pastor.

For Mrs. Meronev
Mrs Delia Meroney, 83. widow
of John Meroney, died at her
home in Murphy Sunday after
noon at 4:40 o'clock, following a
long illness.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock
at First Methodtst church, of
w ich she was a member, with
the Rev Ralph Taylor, officiat
ing. At the request of the fam
ily, Mr. Taylor read the 13th
chapter of First Corinthians, de
dicating it to her whose life had
been spent in sacrifical love and
service to her family and to all
with whom she came in contact.

ters, Mrs. Lula Taylor, of Bryson
City. Mrs. J. H. Abernathy of
Andrews, Mrs. C. E. Weir and
Miss Adella Meroney, of Murphy;
one son. Bailey B. Meroney of
Murphy; nino grandchildren and
six great-grandchildren: one sis
ter, Mrs. F. J. Axley, of Los An
geles, Calif., and a brother, Reb
Phillips, of Murphy.

Va. Private Morris is a brother
of Sgt. Samuel R. Morris. who
\vas killed in a plane crash in
Texas, October, 1943.

Board To Assist
With Filing Of
Applications
The county board of elections
will be in the office of the clerk
of court at the courthouse on
Tuesday. Thursday and Satur
days from 8 a. m. to 4 p. m.. for
the prpose of registering those in
service who wish to vote in the
primary May 27. They will assist
in filling out the applications.

Boy Scout Adult
Membership Drive
Started By Lions
The Mrphy Lions Club honor
ed Pvt. Duke Whitley, a member
serving in the U. S. Army, Tues
day night at their regular meet
ing During the meeting the elub
voted to sponsor the Boy Seout
adult, membership drive, and K.
C. Wright, chairman, told about
increasing the Boy Scout mem
bership in Murphy. The revenue
received from the adult drive will
be used in the Nantahala district
of the Daniel Boone Council
which includes Cherokee. Clay
and Graham counties. Mr.
Wright also stated that $900.
which is the quota for the drive,
is a small amount to invest in
the toys in this section.
The Murphy recreation park
was discussed, and the club voted
to help in every way possible to
further development of the park
and to work with the community
as a whole in a fund raising cam
paign for this purpose. Doyle
Burch was appointed chairman
of this committee for the Lions
club.

was formerly with the district
health department, has been pro
moted to first lieutenant. He is
a sanitarian with the army and
is serving overseas.
A. N. Brown, district sanitarian,
who recently left to enter the
army as a private, has been re
leased at Port Bragg and will ac
cept a commission as a second
lieutenant with the United States
Public health service.

Dies Saturday
After Short Illness
Mrs. Sallie Baity Hawkins, 57.
wife of Ernest P. Hawkins, promi
nent Murphy business man and
former Cherokee county repres
entative in the state legislature,
died at her home here Saturday
night following a three days' ill
ness.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock
at Shady Grove Baptist church,
with the Rev. Thomas Truett of
ficiating. Brothers-in-law were
pallbearers. Interment was in
the church cemetery with Town
son funeral home in charge.

Health Department
Harry Webster, former manag
er of the local branch of Southern
Dairies, has accepted a position
as senior sanitarian with the
Cherokee-Clay -Graham health de
partment. effective April 1. He
was with the health department
in Boone for a number of years.

1 became secretary of the depart
ment. in Murphy. Miss Helen
Ghormley became county nurse

DIKE WHITLEY HOME
Pvt. Duke Whitley, who has
been at Camp Wolters. Texas, for
the past 17 weeks taking basic
training, is at home on a 10-day
delayed route.

Tuesday. April 18, has been set
aside for the cleaning-up of the
business district of Murphy, as a
climax to the clean-up drive be
ing observed this week. All places
of business are asked to close up
at 12:30 on Tuesday and all em
ployees meet at the public square
with hoes, rakes and other equip
ment for cleaning up, and to work
as a group until 4 o'clock.
Trucks are being furnished for
hauling away all trash and debris
collected and put accessible to the
trucks by everybody in town.

Killed In Truck
Accident Sunday
Ralph Taylor, 14, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Bob Taylor, of Ogreeta,
died at a Murphy hospital Sun
day night from injuries suffered
Sunday morning, when the pick
up truck in which he was riding
with Wesley Whitener overturned
near his home, pinning him be
neath it, it was reported.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday at 1 :30 p. m. at Ogreeta
church with the Rev. J. B. Corn
ett of Englewood, Tenn.. officiat
ing. Burial was in the church

Surviving are the parents, three

Bill Owenby Dies
In California
News was received here Tues
day by Paul Owenby that his
brother. Sgt. W. G. (Bill) Owen
by was found dead in his bed last
Friday morning. He was station
ed at the army air field, Muroc.
California and was engaged in
training crews to fly combat
heavy bombers, it was reported,
and it was believed that strenu
ous work and high altitude had
affected his heart.
The body is expected to reach
the home of his father in Mariet
ta. Georgia. Saturday or Sunday.

county held a mass meeting at
Farmers Federation Tuesday. M
