Thorpe Chairman U. S, 0. Campaign Appointment of J. E. S. Thorpe of Franklin as district chairman of the 1946-47 U. S. O. campaign, has been announced by State Cam paign Chairman L. Y. Ballentine. Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina. Seven counties are embraced in the district U. S. O. organization which Mr. Thorpe will head. They are Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Hay wood, Jackson, Macon and Swain. County chairmen will be named for each county in the district prior to opening of the actual drive which is scheduled for Oc tober 1st. The 1946-47 drive will be the last U. S. O. campaign. It has been designated by President Tru man and other national leaders as the "See-it-Through" campaign. As the U. S. O. directors have an nounced, USO will complete its wartime, demobilization and re conversion services December 31. 1947. Last year funds for the opera tion of USO were raised as a part of the National War Fund. This year the USO campaign is separate and distinct as activities of the United War Fund will terminate at the end of December of this year. In emphasizing the importance of the work to be done by the USO during 1947 Lt Governor Bal lentine pointed out that some 59,000 North Carolina men and women are still in service or in hospitals, "and they need the pro gram carried on by the USO. We cannot let them down. Many of them are serving in foreign lands thousands of miles from home and some are in lonely out-post hos pitals. We. I am sure, will not let them down." Mr. and Mrs. Glen Williamson were visitors of Mr. Williamson's mother a day last week. Fair and Callie Hamby were guests of Mrs. W. L. Williamson Sunday afternoon.
