Winner At Fair
ANDREWS ? Carolyn Smith,
sixteen year old Andrews high !
school 4-H girl, was a winner of
the blue ribbon and first prize at
the State Fair, in the clothing con
test. This is the second Andrews
high school student within a few
years to win a first place in 4-H
work. Sammy Russell having won
first place in 1942 in the baby beef
contest.
Miss Smith's ensemble consisted
of a woolen suit with blouse and
accessories including hat. shoes
and gloves. Her first place was
worth a $25 war bond to her. and
also gave her the right to compete
in the State Clothing Achievement
contest, she being one of five in
this group the winner of which will
have an all-expense trip to Chi
cago.
This Andrews girl is the daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Smith.
She has been in 4-H work for four j
years, and was president of the
local club last year and was also :
Resident of the Cherokee county
Council. The past summer she at
tended a 4-11 short course at State
College in Raleigh.
For other 4-H work she has
completed creditable projects in
room improvement, gardening, and
food conservation. She is now
a tenth grade student in the local
high school where she has an ex
cellent scholastic record.

Camping Trip
H1WASSEE DAM ? At their
meeting on Friday the Girl Scouts
of Troop No. 1 planned for an
I overnight camping trip at the scout
I cabin across the dam. They de- i
cided to appoint groups to do
specified jobs and earn points.
They discussed entertainment,
clothes, food and water. A new
member. Faye Chapman, was re
ceived. Eloise and Betty Dockery
taught the group a new song thus
earning a point on their second
class rank.
Saturday. Troop 1 spent the
night at the Scout cabin near the
lake, leaving the village in the
late afternoon. They hiked to the
cabin, prepared supper, had a
camp fire program, and after
breakfast returned to attend Sun
day school at the Dam.

man. Alma Cole. Opal Crain. Mary
Flurry. Doris Jean Hawkins. Ruth
Jones, Becky Morgan. Mrs. W. T.
Gibson and Miss Marion Jones.

At YWA Meeting
Twenty-two members were pres
ent at the YWA meeting of First
Baptist ehureh at the home of
Miss Jean Dickey Monday night
at 7:30. The meeting opened with
the singing of the YWA hymn,
"O Zion Haste." followed by the
Lord's Prayer repeated in unison.
Miss Eloise Davis gave the devo
tional after which Mrs. Helen Am
nions welcomed two new members.

English, into the YWA.
A business session followed
which included the treasurer's re
port. community mission project
for November, and social activities.
