Dolan, District Health Officer, states that North Carolina has been designated as an acute danger area for rabies. Figures recently released by the North Carolina Slate Board of Health re vealed over 250 positive laborato ry-confirmed cases of animal ra bies and over 700 people took the antirabic treatment in 1951. When clinical cases are considered, there would be several hundred positive cases of animal rabies. The term "Clinical cases" refers to live ani mals observed showing symptoms of rabies but whose heads were not sent to the State Laboratory of Hygiene upon death. He pointed out that rabies con trol is a state-wide and national I problem, but these problems are only as successful as the local pro- 1 crams carried out in the various counties. The North Carolina State Board of Health recently established a \ eterinary Public Health Section to assist the county health depart ment toward organizing adequate rabies programs which will be uni form and which have one objec tive: the eradication of rabies. Dr. Dolan went on to stress that Cher okee County cannot be free from constant danger unless rabies is eradicated and unless the neigh boring counties do the same. In conclusion, he said that the County Health Department cam paign to control rabies would de pend entirely on the cooperation of the citizens toward this public health problem.
