in a candle-light service at the
June meeting which will be in
the form of a picnic held at the
home of Misses Kate and Leila
Hayes. The Bryson City Guild
will be invited guests.

Robert Slagle, 61
Is Taken Monday
Robert Nelson Slagle, 61, died
of a heart attack Monday morn
ing while working in a tobacco
field at his home in the Cheoah
section of Graham County.
He was a native of the Lauada
section of Swain County, the son
of the late David and Sinia Bai
ley Slagle of Franklin. He moved
to Graham County in 1943 where
he worked with the TVA during
the construction of Fontana Dam.
Surviving are the widow. Mrs.
Docia Fredy Slagle: two sons.
Frederick B of Robbinsville and
Newport News. Va., and Clyde
Nelson Slagle with the Atlas Con
struction Company, Casa Blanca.
French Morocco, Africa. Three
daughters, Mrs. Edith Hill of Mar
ietta, Ga., Mrs. Nell Green of Web
ster, and Mrs. Violet Nichols of
Talassse, and 18 grandchildren.
Funeral services are planned In
Sawmill Hill Free Will Baptist
Church in Lauada at 2 p. m.
Thursday. The Rev. Henry Coch
rane will officiate and burial will
be in tbe church cemetery.
Ivie Funeral Home is in charge.

Sgt. Hubert Williams was here
over the week-end with Mrs. Wil
liams and baby, Hu. He took then
back to Florida Monday. He wil
leave this week for Greenland
and Mrs. Williams and baby wil
return to Murphy.
Mrs. J. W. Davidson attended
era Carolina State College last
week-end. There was a meeting
of the board of trustees on Sat
urday. the baccalaureate sermon
was preached Sunday by Dr. Mark
Dett of Wins tun-Salem. Sunday
afternoon. Dr. and Mrs. Reid en
tertained with a garden party,;
the faculty concert was given
Sunday night and Monday gradu
ation exercises were held, with U.
S. Rep. Brooks Hays of Arkansas
delivering the address. Honorary
degrees of Dr. of Literature and
Dr. of Laws were conferred upon
D. Hiden Ramsey, vice-president
of the Asheville Citizen-Times
Company, and Judge Felix E. Al
ley of Waynesville, respectively.
Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Green ar
rived in Murphy Monday and are
occupying - one of the Dr. Taylor
apartments. Mr. Green will begin
his work as recreational director
for the summer on June 2. He will
be a member of the Murphy
school faculty next term.
