Hall Accepts Call .
As Army Chaplain

of St. Andrew's E. Lutheran
Church in Andrews, announces
J that he has resigned his pas
j torate in Andrews, effective Au
gust 15, to accept a call to the
I United States Army Chaplaincy

Pastor Hall has been ordered to
report August 24 to the 3420th
Area Service Unit, Fort Bragg.
After reporting for duty, he will
be sent immediately for five weeks
of Chaplain's School at Fort Slo
cum. New York, returning to Fort
Bragg around the first of Octo
ber.
Mr. Hall was born in Koblenz,
Germany, while his father was
serving as a chaplain with the Uni
ted States Army of Occupation.
His father felt the call to serve
the young men of our Armed
Forces so strongly that he remain
ed in the Army as a chaplain until
retirement in 1940, when Mr. Hall
entered Lenoir Rhyne College,
Hickot-y. Upon graduation he
served two years with the US
Navy. Being discharged, he finish
ed at the Lutheran Theological
Seminary at Philadelphia. Pa.,
coming to Andrews immediately
after his ordination.
Pastor Hall has been quite ac
tive in civic affairs in Andrews.
He has been chairman of the An
drews Chapter of the American
Red Cross and served as chairman
of the blood drive, bringing the
first visit of the Bloodmoblle to
Andrews. For two years he has
been Home Service Chairman of
the Andrews' Red Cross. As chair
man of the Cherokee County
Crippled Children's League, he
brought the first drive to estab
lish the Crippled Children's Clin
ic held In Andrews every other
J month. He has become well-known
to many people by his daily hos
pital visits in the Rodda-Van Gor
der Hospital.
Serving on committees he has
helped with the Fourth of July
Celebration each year, is a mem
ber of the Board of the Andrews'
Carnegie Library and has been
Secretary of the Cherokee Coun
ty Ministerial Association.
I Mr. Hall feels there is a bright
future for a community with such
spirit and talent as Andrews has
expressed on many occasions.
Finish Workshop
A School Lunchroom Workshop,
sponsored by the State Depart
ment of Public Instruction, com
pleted a five-day training pro
gram, Friday, July 26, at WCTC,
Cullowhee.
One hundred lunchroom mana
gers and supervisors from 29
North Carolina counties attended.
Courses were conducted in food
handling, service, nutrition, menu
planning and food preparation.
Mrs. Ruth Cathey, supervisor of
the Andrews lunchroom, was
among those attending. Mrs. Boyd
Davis represented the Murphy
school lunchroom.

Dies At Age 66
Arthur Griffeth, age 66, died at
t is home in Andrews Thursday,
July 24. at 5:30 a. m. following aj
brief illness.

A native of Clay County, he was
married in 1905 to Miss Ezra An
| derson, also of Clay County, who
| survives.
He has been a resident of An
| drews since 1920. He formerly
( worked at the Andrews Tannery
and was later employed by the
town of Andrews. f

survived by a son, James Arthur,
of Andrews; three daughters, Mrs.
Stella Martin of Hayesvllle; Mrs.
Walter Bryan and Mrs. Margaret
Ann Martin of Andrews; and two
sisters, Mrs. Callie Russell of Ma
rietta. Ga.. and Mrs. Mary Jane
Ledford of Canton, Ga.
Funeral services were conducted
at the home in Andrews Friday, at
2 pm. with the Rev. E. L. Kirk
; officiating.

Episcopal Bible
School Begins
A two weeks' Vacation Bible
School began at the Episcopal
Chapel and Church Sunday in An
drews on Monday, August 4, at
S:30 a. m.
Donald Pitt of Richmond, Va.,
student minister of the Episcopal
Church, is the leader. He is re
siding at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
R. A. Dewar while conducting the
EChool.
The Rev. and Mrs. Rhett Wint
ers of Murphy, and Mrs. R. A.
Dewar are assisting with the
school. All children, regardless of
denomination affiliation, are wel
come.
Mrs. Moore Given
Surprise Party
A group of friends gave a sur
prise birthday party for Mrs. Mor
ris Moore Wednesday, July 23, at
S p. m. at the home of Mrs. Moore.
Several games were played. Af
ter the gifts were opened and dis
played the guests were invited to
the dining room where punch and
cake were served to the following

Birthday Party
Mrs Morris Moore entertained
with a birthday party for her
daughter, Billie, on her seventh
birthday on Thursday, July 24,
from 2 until 4 p. m.
Mrs. Eloise Crisp and Mrs.
Brown Caldwell assisted Mrs.
Moore with games and contests
which were held on the lawn.
Refreshments of birthday cake,
ice cream and punch were servd
to approximately 30 guests.

The Andrews Presbyterian Sun
day School held their annual pic
nic at the Nantahala Picnic Area
Tuesday evening, July 21.
The Sunday School invited the
entire church membership to the
picnic
Following the supper a long
social period ?aa enjoyed with
groups taking advantage of the
many recreational facilities at the
picnic area.
