John Henry Cross Dies At Home John Henry Cross, age 72, died at his home at Nontahala Wednes day afternoon. Funeral service* were conducted Friday morning at the Hewtlt Baptist Church, with the Rev. Clifford T. George and the Rev. C. L. Adams officiating. Internment was in Briartown Cemetery. A native of Macon Oounty, Mr Cross was a former school teacher in Macon County. Since 1027 he had been employed by the Nan lahata lisle and Limestone Com pany as a clerk In the store and ai. bookkeeper. He was a member and deacon of the Hewitt Baptist Church. Mr. Cross is survived by the widow, Mrs. Etta Douthit Cross, one daughter, Mrs. Alice Stllley, and one son, Arnold, all of Nan La he la. Also surviving are five grandchildren, one sister. Margaret Akin Is School Art Editor Miss Margaret Akin has been named ait editor for the Western Carolina Teachers College annual, 1952-53 edition. Graveside Rites Held For Child Graveside rites were conducted in Andrews Saturday afternoon lor Lynn Greenwood, seven year old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Greenwood Jr., of Land nan, S. C. The child was struck by an auto while be was attempting to cross a street near his home Thursday afternoon. He died in a Spartan burg hospital at 11:50 p. m. Thurs day night. Lynn was mascot of the 1950 Senior Class of Andrews High School He Is survived, in addition to his parents, by three brothers, Mike, Johnny and Bill, and by the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred MoConnell, of An drews; and by the paternal grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Conservation Congress Be in Raleigh Soon Cherokee Co u n t y residents, along with the general public, are invHed to attend the Conservation Congress in Raleigh, Nov. 17, 18 and IB In the Hall of the House of Representatives. George R. Ross, director of the North Carolina Department of Conservation and Development, is in charge. The congress will be highlighted by a general presen tation of programs dealing with the Stale's human and natural re sources and the wiser use of these footers in the life and economy of the people of North Carolina. The total Uvewelght of meat animals slaughtered was 20,192, 000 pounds, the Crop Reporting Service stated, from 72,500 head. Slaughter was up S per cent over test August, with the Increase at tributed chiefly to cattle. The increase In calves slaugh tered over last year was 24 per oent, with a total of 778,000 pounds. The slaughter erf mutton and lamb showed an Increase over last year, and hog slaughter was up a little less than 1 per cent Slaughter of cattle for Septem ber showed an increase of 9 per cent In pounds over August, sta tisticians reported, while calf slaughter dropped 7 per cent for the same period. There was an increase over August of 2 per cent In the number of head of meat animals slaughtered in September.
