Highway Dept. Paints 17,500 Miles Of Lines Raleigh ? The State Highway Commission last year painted 17, 500 miles of highway centerlines, including the yellow barrier lines at potential danger points, it was reported today by Traffic Engineer Robert A. Burch. A total of 12,448 miles of white centerlines and 5,052 miles of yel low barrier lines, which serve as warning to motorists, were laid down in 1952. Burch emphasized that the mileage painted in the year does not mean that is the total miles of painted lines in existence on North Carolina highways. Many miles of roads painted in 1951 did not need repainting last year, due to use of a superior paint in 1951 Roads not repainted in 1952 will require new centerlinlng this year, Buroh explained.
