Mr*. Gertrude Woodburry, 84,
wife if W. H. Woodbury of Ashe
vllle, died early Thursday morning
April 2, in a nursing home there
after a long illness.
Mrs- Woodbury was born in At
lanta, Ga? the daughter at the late
Albeit and Margie Costeo Wood
bury. She wad married to Mr.
Woodbuy in IBM, and shortly after
their marriage, they mated to Mur
phy where Mr. Woodbary was en
gaged la the lumber business.
They moved to Ashevllle about
40 years ago, but returned to Mur
phy again for several years
Mr. Woodbury built the bouse
later owned and occupied by the
late Mrs. Carolyn Bryson, situated
on the lot where the Arbor Autel
now stands- About 30 years ago.
they made their permanent home
in Ashevllle. '
Both Mrs. Woodbury and hear
husband were deeply interested in
Masonic and Eastern Star worr,
and they were two of the founders
of the Masonic and Eastern Star
Home in Greensboro- She served
on the board of directors of the
home until illness forced her to re
tire in 1938.
She was a Past Grand Matron of
the Grand Chapter of the North
Carolina Order of the Eastern
Star anl helped establish a number
of chapters in Western North Car
olina during the early part of this
century. s
Until recent years, she was an
active member of the First Bap
tist Church and was a member of
the Missionary Union of the church
Mr. and Mrs- Woodbury celebrat
ed their 60th wedding anniver
sary April 26, 1952.
Funeral services were conducted
Saturday in the chapel of Lewis
Funoral Home. Burial was in
Lewis Memorial Park
Surviving are the husband: three
sisters, 15 nieces and nephews.
