THE SOUKWOOD TEES
BY NOEA COBB SPENCEB
I
At 1 (o on my walk each )oyoue
day.
I atop at a sourwood tree on the
way?
Ha leaves wearing the color of old
rose
Under the sun's rays reflect a soft
glow.
The clusters of white flowers drap
ed from limbs' ends
All make a canopy of artistic
blend.
I wonder why the name?not at
tractive, tie true?
The tree is so beautiful, so useful.
artMic
Then I thought from the sourwood
by the busy bees we are fed,
"Out of the strong came forth;
sweetness," so Sampson said.
If we had eyes that really see and
ears that hear
God's marvelous wonders would
be more clear.
Then I bowed my (head and
thought I shall never see
Anything with more beauty and
and grace than the sourwood
tree.
A & P Celebrates
94th Anniversary
Ralph W. Burger, president of
The Great Atlantic and Pacific
Tea Company last week launched a
month-long celebration of the na
tion's oldest food chain's 94>th an
niversary, with a caution to the
food industry of the country a
gainst wasteful practices that
might tend to increase the cost of
food to consumers or reduce re
turns to producers.
Mr. Burger cited the three ma
jor areas in which the industry
should seek improved performance
1.Narrow the spread between farm
and retail prices; 2. Reduce waste
and spoilage of food; 3. Avoid both
merchandising practices and types
of merchandise that will reduce
efficiency and increase operating
costs.
A & P started first as a tea com
pany, gradually adding spices,
staple groceries, meats, fresh
fruits and vegetables. Today the
average super market stock some
3,000 focd items. *
