'This the 1st day of December, IMS. J. L. HALL, CLERK SUPERIOR COURT 31-4tc GARDEN TIME BY BOBUtT SCHMIDT More about pruning trees and shrubs: As I said last week, about this time of year many people get the urge to go out and cut their shrubs and trees. I have noticed many times in the city that when shrub bery has become too large and must he out back severely It will be done at this time of season In stead of the period Just before growth starts la the spring. What I am trying to bring out la the fact that if you prune trees or drubs back severely now you will have to look at the naked stumps all win ter since there will be no growth until spring. On the other hand, if the prun ing was done In late winter or ear ly spring, it would take only a short while for the new growth to cover up the ugly stumps. Of course, no shrubs dtould be al lowed to get into so bab s condi tion that they should have to be out back to large stumps. Intelli gent pruning etch year should pre vent that Spring flowering shrub* should he pruned only lightly during ttie dormant season if you wish a lot of bloom. That would Include spiraea, foraythia, climbing roses and other similar spring bloomers. Heavier pruning can be done immediately after they are through blooming. Summer flowering shrubs such as crape myrtle and bybird tea roses may be pruned quite severely during the dormant period because they bloom on the new wood. It la best to delay the pruning of hy brid tea roses until late in the dor mant season or until danger of bard freezing la past. If you have any pear trees, the less pruning you do on them the hotter. Pruning will force out the new growth, and this new growth Is very susceptible to fire blight In fection. The same cautions apply to the fertilization and cultivation of pears. Keep fertilization and cultivation down to a minimum In order to slow down growth. Fig bushes are often damaged by cold weather and, therefore, It BETTIS PROMOTED PORT LEE, VA ?Pic Joe E.
