Understanding' was the theme of
last week's meeting of the Chero
kee County Four-H Council when
a devotional on "Christmas Around
the World" and a talk on the
United Nations by Mrs Dallas Mc
Kown were heard
Some 26 Four-H members, re (
presenting eight clubs were pres
ent Mrs Marion Wilson, leader of
a Hiwassee Dam Four-H Club was
also present.
The meeting was held Saturday
at the courthouse with Clara
Hughes presiding and Jerry Ruth
Smith leading carol singing The
devotional was given through film
strips and records
The council plans to meet each
month and officers will be elected
next month Assistant County
Agent L V McMahan gave a brief
talk on the purpose of the council

The council is made up of Four
H officers
United States pasture conditions
on October 1 averaged 56 per cent
of normal as low as any recorded
for that date in nearly four decade"
except in 1934 and 1936, when con
ditions averaged 54 per cent.

Staying Home
To prevent the reckless spend
ing of lives every Christmas, the I
National Safety Council today
called on Americans to Join in a
nationwide Christmas savings plan
to stop accidents
The Council's yuletide ledger
shows a loss of 740 lives, from al!
accidents, during the Christmas
holidays last year?and the toll of |
556 lives in traffic was the highest
on record
"It is time," Ned H. Dearborn,
Council president. said, "for
America to start saving-and stop
squandering?lives. If every
American will Join this savings
plan before the Christmas holi
days. a real yuletide bonus?
human life?will be paid.'
One hundred and sixty-three na
tional organizations, city and state
officials, safety councils and civic
leaders have joined the Council in
the Christmas savings plan. They
will unite in creating an awareness
of the special holiday hazards and
will enlist voluntary cooperation
from every' American to hold acci
dents to a minimum
The Christmas-New Year holi
day season is the most hazardous
single period of the year, accord
ing to Council statistics. In traffic
accidents alone, twice as many per
sons are killed during a Christ
mas holiday period as on the same
days of the preceding two weeks.
INCREASED HAZARDS
Heavier travel and the festive
spirit of the holiday season in
crease the normal winter hazards,
such as bad weather , slippery
roads and more hours of darkness.
The Council suggests four safety
measures for Christmas pleasures:
1. Start automobile trips early
and take it easy. Be extremely cau
tious in bad weather and darkness.
Watch out for pedestrians.
2. Keep Christmas trees in
water and away from fire Be sure
lights and electrioal connections
are in good condition.
3. Watch out for falls, at home
and away from home. Be wary of
Icy sidewalks. Falls are second
to traffic as accident killers.
4. Be moderate in drinking,
and don't drive if you have been
drinking. Tipsy pedestrians and
drinking drivers are most common
during the holidays.
