week announced his candidacy for j
Clerk of The Superior Court of :

ions for the Democratic Primary
May 29.
Mr. Hatchett, a native of Cher
okee County, is a veteran of World
War II. He s a member of the Bel
view Methodist Church. He was
graduated from Murphy High
School in 1944 and since then has
had work with the University of
North Carolina and International
Accounting Society.
He has been employed by the
Hitchcock Corp of Murphy for the
past five years, serving a* a plant
superintendent for the past year.
He is married to the former Miss
Martin Jean Chastain, daughter ofj
Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Chastain. i
Elementary Teams To
Play Tournament

The CheroKee uwmy racunrui-^
ary Basketball Tournament will be
played next week in the Murphy
Gym on Thursday and Friday
nights. Mar. 25-26.
The four teams already register
ed for the tourney are Peachtrec,
whose coaah is Jerry Hall; White
Church, Horace King, coach; Mar
tin's Creek. Douglas Smith, coaoh;
and Urraka. J. C. Pipes, coach.
Other teams willprobably enter, a
spokesman said.
All other teams interested in
joining the tournament are asked
to contact Jerry Hall. The finals
in the tournament will be played
Friday night.
Two trophies will be presented
the winning teams. Admission is
25 cents and 10 cents. I

Census Reveals 1,030 Persons
"Unreached" In Murphy
The town wide census, made re
cently by representatives from
several Murphy ( churches, this
week reported a total of 2,381
cards turned in with almost half
of these <1-0301 listed as "unreach
ed prospects".
The census was the first step
made in an all-out church atten
dance campaign launched the first
, Sunday in March and ending East
er Sunday.

Accidental Electrocution Is
Fatal To Helen Coffey
Mrs. Helen Dockery Coffey, 20,
died by electrocution Friday,
I March 12, in her apartment here
in the home of Mrs. Walter Witt.
Dr. Harry Miller, Cherokee County,
Coroner reported.

Laundry went to the home about
111 a. m. to deliver some laundry,

ing on the floor with one hand on
a vacuum cleaner and the other

electric heater.
Investigating officers reported
'.hat the heater apparently ground
ed the current and resulted in fa
tal electric shock for Mrs. Coffey
who was evidently cleaning house.
Dr. Miller ruled that death was
due to accidental electrocution and
said no inquest was necessary.
Mrs. Coffey suffered electric
burns about the hands and legs.
It was found necessary to turn
off the main electric switch In the
home before the body could be re
moved.
Mrs. Coffey had been employed
with the Western Carolina Tele-!
phone Co. here as an operator for
the past year. She was married
January 29 to William Coffey who j
survives. '

day at 11 a. m. in Ebenezer Bap
tist Church, with the Rev. Weldon
West officating. Burial was in the
church cemetery.
Townson Funeral home was in
charge.

Davis Esso Service Center next,
week will have a two day open
house-Friday and Saturday, Mar.

The recently remodeled station
is said to be one of the most mod
ern in this- part of the state.
The station was constructed in
1926 on land purchased for the
purpose from Dr. Wells. It was op
erated for several years by the
Standard Oil Company as a com
pany station.
It has operated a? Davis Esso for,
the past 10 years. It is run by Lor
en Davis, Boyd Davis and Sam Dav (
idson.
The recent remodeling consisted
of thp construction of new office,
new rest rooms and the entire
structure is covered in white por
celain.

Mr. Brumby is a member of the
board of trustees of Murphy
Schools, and % a member of the
Town of Murphy Board of Alder
men. He is an elder in the Murphy
Prespyterian Churah.
He is married to the former
Mary Faye Martin, and they have
three children, Mary Bolan, Ida
and Edward Hunt Brumby, Jr., all
of the home.

was county winner in "The Big
Change" oratorical contest spon
sored by the North Carolina Bank

Miss Sneed went yesterday to
Asheville where she entered the
group eliminations at 2:80 p. m. In
the committee club room of the
First National Bank.
Miss Sneed was presented a $25
bond as the Cherokee County Win
ner. The bond was awarded by W.
D. Whitaker of the Citizens Bank
and Trust Co. and county chairman
for the contest
Amateur Show Be
Given In Andrews
The Konnaiieeta GiuD of And-'
rews will sponsor an amateur show
Tuesday, Mar. 30, in the High
School Auditorium.
Admission will be 10 cents and
25 cents, and the show will last
about an hour and a half. Ger
ald Almond will be Master of
Ceremonies.
Anyone may enter the show in
one of .the thre^ age brackets: 5
years to 12 years; 12 to 18: and 18
and up.
Anyone interested in appearing
on the show is asked to contact
Margaret Ann Watry and register.
Final day for refistration for the
show is Saturday, Mar. 27.
The contestants will be judged
by judges selected by members of
the Konnaheeta Club.
All contestants must be at the
hight school at 7 p. m. on the night
of the performance to get their
number for order of appearance.
The drawing for the TV set will
take place at the intermission.
