Gene Bates, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Glenn Bates Is in Salisbury Mem
orial Hospital, suffering from
injuries received in an automlble
accident last Thursday near Salis
bury. Gene, who ig a student at
East Carolina College, Greenville,
was returning to school after hav
ing spent spring holidays here,
when his car skidded and overturn
ed on the wet pavement K was re
ported. His mother, and Mrs. John
Davidson have been with him this
week, and may be able to bring
him home by the end of the week
according to reports.
Mrs. Carrie Brittain Ray who
underwent surgery at Emory Hos
pital, recently has returned home
and is reported to be convalescing
nicely.
C. S. Freel of Andrews under
went an operation at Orange Mem
orial Hospital, Orlando, Fla., on
Ap. 4. He is reported to be gett
ing along well and hopes to be
home again socn. The Freels spent
the winter in Orlando with Mrs.
Freel's sister, Mrs. Ed Slagle.

Eiroy who has been here several
weeks. They will leave in August
for the Belgian Congo, Africa
where they are in the mission

Lt. and Mrs. George Dunn and
children, Kathy and Bobby arrived
here last week to visit Mrs. Dunn's
parents, Mr. and Mrs Roy V.
Lovingood. Lt. Dunn left Friday
for the Naval Shipyard at Port
mouth, N. H. for duty in the Sup
ply Corps. They came here from
Dmarest, N. J. where they had
been wtth Lt. Dunn's mother, Mrs.
L. L. Emerson. Mrs. Dunn and the
children will remain for some time
with her parents.

Funeral services were held at 2
p. m. Sunday in Valleytown Bap
tist Church near Andrews, with
the Rev. James Truett officiating.
Burial was in the church cemet
ery.
Surviving are one daughter,
Mrs. Gladden; two sisters, Mrs.
F. C. Cochran of Andrews, and
Mrs. Wymer Padgett of Lake Al
fred, Fla. !
Also four brothers, Joe, Wayne,
and Jack Conley of Andrews, and
Frank Conley of Lake Alfred, Fla.

Dr. Hooper Dies
In Hiawassee Ga.
Dr. James L. Hooper. Sr., 74, of
'I'awassee. Ga. died at 5 a. m.
Thursday, April 8 in a Hiawa&see
hospital after a long illness.
He had been engaged in the drug
business in Hiawassee for a num
ber of years.
Funeral services were held at 2
p. m. Friday in McConnell Memor
ial Baptist Church.
The Rev. Wallace Treat and the
Rev. J. K. Hutchins officiated and
burial was in Osborne Cemetery.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs.
Eva Barrett Hooper; one son. Dr.
James L. Hooper. Jr., of Hiawas
