CORNWELL DIES

Samuel Wlllard Cornwell, 43
year-old resident of Route 3, Mur
phy, became the first traffic death
victim in Cherokee County in 12
months when his 1931. A-Model
1 Ford plunged Into Owl Creek from 1
Hangingdog Road about 9 a. m.
Sunday.
Patrolman Ray Heffner reported .
the body was found by Creed Head ;
Route 1, Murphy and it was believ
1 e<J the acc-dent occurred some
time after 1 a. m. Sunday.
Cornwell was apparently alone
when his car left the road on the
right side, followed the shoulder
for 124 feet crossed the highway
and plunged down an ambankment
into the creek.
The accident occurred near the
intersection of Hangingdog and
I Owl Creek Roads. Patrolman Wal
ter G. Leming Andrews assisted in
the investigation.
Funeral services for Cornwell
White Churrh, with the Rev.. Fred
were held at 2 p. m. Tuesday in
Stiles officiating. Burial was In the
church cemetery.

To Be Organized

Joins Exercise
Murphy's 34 volunteer ground
observers will face the most Im
portant exercise of their training
starting at 8 a. m. Wednesday,
March 23, W. C. Messer, GOC sup
ervisor, said today.
A general alert starting March
23 will last for 33 hours and will
need the assistance of every volun
teer in the Murphy Ground Obser
vors Corps, Mr. Messer asserted.
The new exercise will end at 5 p.
m. Friday, March 25.
Between 75 to 100 flights will be
made in this area day and night
during the exercise. This special
spring exercise is being made to
test the detection and interception
capabilities of the Murphy GOC,
Mr. Messer said.

Lawson, Marc Ben-Joseph and
Joseph Dean.

The first step in organizing a
booster club for the Murphy School
Band was taken last week by a
group of interested citizens meet
ing a: thu school.
The nominating committee ap
pointed will report at the organiz
ational meet of the club tonight
Thursday, Mar. 17 at 7:30 in the
band room. Anyone interested in
the project of boosting the band
is invited to attend and join.
It was pointed out Friday that ?
the state does not set aside any
funds to be spent for transporta
tion, uniforms, instruments and
other needs of a school band. Mor
al support and outside help are
the greatest needs in keeping a
band going it was said.
During Friday's discussion it
was said that some 90 children are
enrolled in band at Murphy School
and only 11 have privately owned
instruments.
The other children in the band
are using some 50 instruments own
ed by the school. Some of the in
struments are almost worn out and
beyond repair, it was said, and in
some cases as many as three chil
dren share an instrument.

Baptist Revial
The Rev. Joe Miller, president of
Truett-McConnell Junior College,
Cleveland, Gt.. will be the evan
gelist for. the Mnrphy First Baptist
Church revival series April 10-17.
The local revival is one of a
chain of simultaneous revivals in
some 29,500 Baptist churches
throughout the south.
Mr. Miller has had wide ex
perience as a pastof-, evangelist
and U. S. Army chaplain. Prior to
becoming president of Truett-Mc
Connell, Mr. Miller was pastor of
the First Baptist Churcji, Ludowici,
Ga.

? The District Memorial ' Hospital
of Southwestern North Carolina,
Inc., announced today that it has
been advised that complete plana
and specifications for the proposed
hospital are expected to be in the
hands of the Medical Care Com
mision in Raleigh before April 1.
If the plans and specifications
are approved by the Medical Care
Commission they will then be for
warded to New York for architect's
approval then to Washington and
back to Raleigh.
On final approval, advertising for
bids for the construction of the hos
pital will start.
Ferebee said that It was hoped
that awarding of contract and
actual construction would be start
ed by the latter part of May.
